Nuvi 3597 stuck at Preparing device for map update

I have had Nuvi 3597 for a while and it worked great. A couple of days ago I tried to update maps using GarminExpress as I did on the past. Update started OK, then the Nuvi got disconnected from the PC. I accidently pulled out USB cable. I did not think much about it. Plugged the cable back and restarted Garmin Express. Nuvi connected to the PC, and I started the map update process again. Unfortunately it got stuck at at Preparing device for map update. Cannot get pass this screen.

I changed as per previous post to mass storage. No changes.

Any help could be appreciated as I am going to Europe in 2 weeks time and just purchased Europe maps latest version on a memory card.

Temporarily forget the Europe maps; does the “base” unit, have a microSD card? Assuming you live in the States, can you do a normal North America map update?

By the way, what was the source of your European maps? There are a lot of bogus cards in the marketplace, especially on eBay.

No, I cannot do NA map update. The Nuve is stuck as i said before. I tried to insert 16GB formatted to FAT32 and this does not work. In internal memory there is a base map of the world, it seems that when the unit got disconnected during update the NA maps were deleted and something was corrupted. I cannot update the maps.

My other Nuvi 3590 has micro card and when i plugged Map of Europe card it works very well. I have also no issues with NA maps updates.

I would love to fix the 3597 as this is my wife unit. And even though our both cars have NAVs and our IPhones work very well with Google maps. Somehow we love our Nuvis ;)

Hi John,

thank you for the advice. It worked! Now I have GarminExpress in manual mode and not running in the background.

Most people disable the feature of having GE running in the background. Not necessarily becuase of issues, just that there doesn’t seem to be any good reason. By the way, upgrade GE and you have to go in and disable it again if that is your preference.

Thank you John. I will stick with GE in manual mode. Though in retrospect if I restarted the PC it could have solved the problem. Water under the bridge.

This tread shows the power of "community support". There are so many people with similar experiences that solved the issues. So thanks to everyone who contributes to this forum. This is invaluable!
