Garmin Express 7.16.0.0 Unable to install City Navigator North America 2024.10 to Computer

Was able to use Garmin Express 7.16.0.0 on Windows 10 to install City Navigator North America 2024.10 to a Garmin Nuvi. However when attempting use the Garmin Express > Install to Computer option the City Navigator North America 2024.10 installation fails with the message; "There was an error installing the update."

Have deleted the downloaded map files and tried to install to PC again. Once again it failed to install. It appears the installer files used to install City Navigator North America 2024.10 to a computer are not being downloaded. Only see a single file, Disk1.cab (49 MB), possibly used for PC installation that has been downloaded to the "C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\CoreService\Downloads\Map\Map_Map.NA.2024.10\RMU\NA\2024_10\56810671-8e8b-4f10-b768-ae70fc908410\IMG" folder location.

Is this issue a problem with Garmin Express or a problem with the maps on Garmin's end not having the Windows installer files?

  • I think this an issue with the new maps, not Express.  I have an XT, a 590, a desktop computer for planning and a small Windows netbook for travel. After installing  Express 7.16, the new map installed fine on the XT, but errored out as soon as the desktop map installation started. Tried again using the 590, with the same result. I uninstalled Express 7.16 and reverted to 7.15 - same error.  Tried again on the netbook, refused the Express update, and v7.15.2.0 produced the same error - "Map changes failed.". Express 7.15 has worked in the past, what is different seems to be the maps.

  • The Express Logs (using  Express version 7.16.1.0) indicate a Hash mismatch on the download.

  • Just to add a data point to help figure out if its GE or the map, using a Mac I was able to download 2024.10 to my zumo 660 using 7.16.0.0, then went back and did the computer. No idea if splitting it up this way helped or if there is a Windows-specific issue.

PS: Garmin has now released 7.16.1.0

  • At first, I had this issue after updating to 7.16.1.0. Seems something was fixed on the backend, because I was just now able to install City Navigator North America version 2024.10 to my PC.

  • Yes, I agree on that assessment. The Hash mismatch indicated that the files selected for download didn't match what Express was expecting (a specific version/size/ECC value, etc.).

    Working here now also.

Thank you Garmin for a quick solution.

  • Apparently they fixed the problem with the map. I just successfully installed CNNA 2024.10 to my PC using Express 7.15.0.0 and to my netbook using Express 7.16.1.0.

Express no longer provides an option to install the map to a different location. Before, it offered the option and ignored your preference, but it was nice to be asked. It's a struggle to keep enough room free to install the map on the netbook (48Gb free after Windows installation, ~8Gb free usually) and then move it to the D: drive. Sometimes have to move stuff to D: temporarily, install the map, move it, clean up the extra copies and then move the C: files back where they belong.

  • Same. Am now able to Install to Computer from the GE 7.16.1.0 program. No MD5 hash comparison error. Appears issue was fixed on Garmin's back end.

Map download location now includes the map installer files:

Map installed properly and can be used in Basecamp.

  • Thanks for the confirmation. I'll close this thread.
