Garmin Express desperately needs a re-write to allow for download pausing and resume

I've been trying for days to download the latest North America map update to the nuvi 2597.

Here in the hinterland connections can drop and then I'm back to square one. How frustrating. No amount of tinkering with the Garmin Express settings allows it to simply find the cached (where I wonder is it writing the download) file and "resume". This is a simple edit of a couple lines of code.

Come on Garmin team. Make the entire UX match your excellent product UI.

  • Map downloads on Windows 10 are stored at C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map.  Each takes up almost 7 GB (yep, GB) of space and the older ones can be deleted.  I only keep the current and the one prior to it.

  • Strange as my experience in the past is that it will restart where it left off. Having said that I haven't had an issue downloading maps for many years so maybe that behaviour has changed.

  • Thank you both for your input.

JOhnfromPA -- Nothing is written to C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map until the download is completed. So it is being written to a temp folder somewhere first. And that is my point -- take 30 minutes to re-write the code to allow for download pause/resume. NOt everyone is on a city grid for updates.

  • Here, if there is a dropped DSL connection (Ethernet) it will zap the temp file holding the partial download and then restart from the very beginning. So now I've created a "clone SD" card unplugged the Garmin nuvi, and the download is chugging along slowly. But I fear if the DSL line drops (we have noisy lines here) then I'm going to give up.

So a formal request to Garmin techs. Please update Garmin Express to allow for pause/resume downloads. Or -- provide registered user torrents that allow us to download the three files we need as holders of free map licenses.

    Thanks!.

  • As far as I know GE does not restart full DL from source (i.e. server) from the beginning if DL fails / stops at any moment in time, it merely restarts acquisition process, meaning, that it does re-check what's been downloaded to disk first, before attempt is being made to get the remainder off Garmin server's.

It's reflected by much higher 'download' speeds for such initial portion - when data is re-read form the disk - before it drops to reflect average download speed via the internet.

At least this is what I remember witnessing myself - and quite some time ago either - before.

  • I did see the same, once. But not since. There is some variable in the program that determines that and it may have to do with map update settings (device, device+computer, computer) and whether it is an SD card or not. The way I finally got it was to allow Map Update to proceed to a clone SD, and that, overnight without a disconnect.

So the request remains: Garmin team, please add the 3 lines of code to the future Garmin Express update that allows for download pause and resume. It would eliminate frustration and boost UX for the chunk of people around the globe not on hyper speed download grids.

    Thanks for your comment Krzemien!

  • Well best to make that suggestion here www.garmin.com/.../ but as a few posts say Express doesn't start right from the beginning anyway should there be a pause.
