Garmin Express will not Update, Uninstall or Install - need to uninstal at EVERY update!

I have problem updating Garmin Express EVERY time for YEARS now.

Update pop-up every few months:

Result, leaving me with headache:

Updating Garmin Express, even uninstalling/reinstalling Garmin Express ends up with some kind of message Cannot Install. Suggested solutions like runs-as Administrator, Unblock App, etc do NOT work. Then I can uninstall with the Microsoft tool, but WHY do I need that every update again? All my other software works fine.

I am sick now uninstalling Garmin Express every few months.

I am suffering this problem for years now, have had 3 notebooks same problem with Garmin Express, no issues with installing/updating other software. So it cannot be associated with the Windows Install, notebook, etc. Also changed Antivirus vendor from Webroot to Sophos, no change also!

Tips like disable Antivirus are not done anymore in these times with Ransomware danger, Garmin does know from its own experience.

@GarminDev Please this be fixed forever, update should be simple and hassle free. We would like to bike and run instead of troubleshooting and fixing Garmin software.

I am really frustrated now, have invested in Garmin Edge 1030 and ForeRunner 945, but having issues all the time with Garmin Software

  • I am fairly sure this issue is not limited to Garmin software only (SONY Sony Xperia Companion springs to mind...).

And also: why do you even use company equipment for private purposes :-D

  • I use my business notebook for some light private apps as I am not a intensive private user (not a gamer or so). Just Garmin and some other software. Buying a notebook just for private use is also $$$ related and having to take 2 notebooks on holidays, business trips or not being able to do one of the thing on my business trips / holidays. 2 notebooks, not very handy at all…

  • This is so recognizable!  Unbelievable bad software development and customer service. There are by now tons of message and issues complaining about Garmin Express with all kind of different devices, and every possible context. It really should not matter if you're using some anti virus, use VPN etc.  Just does not work, whatever you try. It is just buggy. I really wonder if this is tested at all...

  • Krzemien, you asked "why do you even use company equipment for private purposes?"  One possible reason is ErnstB1 has stated "The laptop is a company laptop (and i am the company owner)."

  • The point is not that he's a company director and therefore that he should be able to use his company's equipment in any way he likes.

The point is that company laptop has probably had certain configuration applied which may - and that's my thesis, based on the fact that there are no issues when GE is run with domain Administrator credentials  - interfere with what GE expects when it runs, or updates.

It might be something silly (registry setting that cannot be changed, path/destination without necessary access rights), it might be something more profound (outdated libraries that cannot be updated, restrictions with regards to VPN allowances etc.).

In either case that most likely is the root cause here (notwithstanding GE sensitivity which is something debatable) and - and if one really has too much time on their hands - should be further investigated.

I simply use my home PC for such stuff and never had experienced any of such problems mentioned here by users over the (10+) years: lack of connectivity with servers, inability to login, issues with removal and update, issues running it, issues downloading maps, you name it...

  • Thank you Krzemien for your reply, when I have some time again I will see if I can find the cause in the domain environment and investigate your idea's. But for now I can update via domain admin login.
