Garmin Express will not Update, Uninstall or Install - need to uninstal at EVERY update!

I have problem updating Garmin Express EVERY time for YEARS now.

Update pop-up every few months:

Result, leaving me with headache:

Updating Garmin Express, even uninstalling/reinstalling Garmin Express ends up with some kind of message Cannot Install. Suggested solutions like runs-as Administrator, Unblock App, etc do NOT work. Then I can uninstall with the Microsoft tool, but WHY do I need that every update again? All my other software works fine.

I am sick now uninstalling Garmin Express every few months.

I am suffering this problem for years now, have had 3 notebooks same problem with Garmin Express, no issues with installing/updating other software. So it cannot be associated with the Windows Install, notebook, etc. Also changed Antivirus vendor from Webroot to Sophos, no change also!

Tips like disable Antivirus are not done anymore in these times with Ransomware danger, Garmin does know from its own experience.

@GarminDev Please this be fixed forever, update should be simple and hassle free. We would like to bike and run instead of troubleshooting and fixing Garmin software.

I am really frustrated now, have invested in Garmin Edge 1030 and ForeRunner 945, but having issues all the time with Garmin Software

  • Never experienced the issues you're having so doubt its a problem at the Garmin end. Whether you like it or not the issue could be your anti virus or your VPN if you use one

  • Thanks for sharing your experience!

It could be the environment of my notebook, its a domain joined Notebook and used for business. My question is why is Garmin Express the only software I have problems with? I use a lot of other software, none have any problems with updating.

I have experienced this issue overtime with 3 different notebooks, Windows 10 and Windows 11

Also changed Antivirus from Webroot to Sophos InterceptX, same issue

I do not have an VPN active while updating

Same issue when updating at my business location and home internet as well

It still can be an Garmin issue when having a specific configuration, I have heard other people having the same issue.

  • Well the way you're connected certainly could be the issue, best bet is to contact Product Support and ask them.

  • Thank you SUSSAMB, I will do that and hope we will find the root cause and a solution for it.

  • The problem is the outdated software. I can't even uninstall Express without the Microsoft tool. So I have the same problem. There was a phase in between when it worked. It's certainly not because of Antivirus that the software can't be updated. It's annoying and it's about time that Garmin updated the software.

  • I agree that something does not work well with maintaining Garmin Express in specific situations. My experience with 3 different notebooks and even more clean installs of Windows 10/11 Professional resulted in the same Garmin Issues again and again (disabled AV, etc, etc nothing helps) not being able to update. Even un/reinstall which is a dirty thing to do and a time consuming procedure, does not work. This problem we are suffering for many years now!

As my notebook is a Microsoft Server DOMAIN joined computer, nothing special configured and no Group policy applied, and with local admin rights on notebook these issue's persist. Even run as administrator does not solve the issue.

However; yesterday I logged out of my notebook, then logged in as domain administrator ( I am a IT company owner, so I can do that because I have the domain administrator password) the update process went with NO issue! Then I logged out and in again with my normal user account (local admin on nb) Garmin Express worked normal with updated version, until the next update I guess!!!

I discussed this with my tech and he thinks that these kind of issues are registry related, that Garmin cannot access/edit registry keys. This is something Garmin needs to fix so that normal user accounts on a domain joined notebook with local admin rights have no issues updating and/or uninstalling and reinstalling Garmin Express.

For now I am fine, and I will not spent time anymore as I have a work around with loging in as a domain administrator for update Garmin Express. But I am happy to work with Garmin Support if they want to solve this issue.

  • It could be the environment of my notebook, its a domain joined Notebook and used for business.

The main question here is: do you own this laptop and are solely user/administrator (with all rights provided etc.)? Or it's IT-managed by the organisation it's registered with?

  • The laptop is a company laptop (and i am the company owner). The Windows11 laptop is indeed managed by the organization, but just default domain joined. As windows domain user, I am local admin on the laptop so that I can install and update/maintain all software. No problem with installing, updating, removing other software, only Garmin Express. Disable Anti-virus does not help. Only login with domain administrator on the notebook does the job (Anti Virus enabled!), but that is not an option for other users with this Garmin Express problem

  • Well, all I can say that I (once, long time ago) tried to install GE on the company laptop I used then - I was troubleshooting some issue and wanted to install it elsewhere to check my theory - and I have utterly failed. In fairness, with bitlocker, USB restrictions and similar stuff it's no surprise at all, but nevertheless: you want to have quick, good experience and piece of mind, just use your own kit - otherwise you will spend ages investigating something that's not worth it.

  • I leave it as is for now, i can update now by just make a quick login as an domain administrator on the notebook. Do the update and then loin as normal user again. Its sad that this problem is for many years now leaving users is same situation with this problem. Buying a private notebook, just to have Garmin Express work is ridiculous.
