Windows 10 Garmin Express doesn't install (upgrade). Uninstall I believe only partially successful. I can't now install at all

Hi,

I wanted to update my Garmin navi, I hadn't done that for about 8 months or so.

I'm using Windows 10, which I keep up to date (automatic updates). I first tried starting Garmin Express, which I have installed already. No luck. I see no windows popping up. Nothing.

I downloaded the latest Garmin Express, and tried to install (upgrade) it. But nothing. When clicking on it, no popup window comes nothing.

I tried uninstalling the existing Garmin Express, using the available Windows uninstal option, in programs. Nothing ... no pop up or nothing. It didn't work. No install happened

I downloaded the MS tool: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17588/windows-fix-problems-that-block-programs-being-installed-or-removed and used this to uninstall. The Windows menu entry is at least gone. But Garmin Express still exists in the list of installed programs. I have there, the option to modify or uninstall. If I click on either of those options, I'm asked if I allow changes etc etc, standard windows question, and when I say "yes", nothing happens ... no pop up etc etc.

But I still can't install the new version of Garmin Express. No pop or nothing when I click on it (either when running as admin or not). I've tried compatibility mode, with Windows 7, it does moan about the version of .net installed. I do have 4.8 installed already. But using Win 8 or Win XP SP3 I see no pop ups.

I have a road trip planned soon, and want to update to the latest maps ...

I have the instll log file (from C:\Users\J Moore\AppData\Local\Temp), for when no compatibility is set here below. But I see no obvious errors. Do you guys see errors ?

  • The map update on my GPS device and also installation onto my laptop worked fine.

Although I've now gone for the Intel as the default card, and added an exception for Base Camp. That way, if any of Garmin's products later don't like the Nvidia card, I don't need to care about that. All the installers/uninstallers should run with the Intel card now. Only the base camp .exe file will run in 3D.

It would be great if Garmin logged the client failure due to the graphics card. It would of made debugging this easier. I would assume that when a window is created, a check for a return code to see if it really was created, should be done in the Garmin app. Its basic programming skills, do/check/act/improve

At least now, another step can be added to help debug Garmin products ...

Have you plugged it in ?
    Is it turned on ?
Have you tried with admin rights ?
    Have you uninstalled it ?
Have you installed it again ?
AND HERE IS THE NEW STEP ... Have you tried a different graphics card ?
Have you tried a different computer (not so easy to do, for people with just one computer, and what are you supposed to do, with the computer it doesn't work on ?).

I'm thinking of upgading Base Camp soon, but I think I'll wait a bit for that one. It works good enough for me. I need some time to recover from my experience with Garmin Express first.

I hope the all the log info above, may help someone else in future debug any issues they have too with Garmin Express. Good luck !
