Windows 10 Garmin Express doesn't install (upgrade). Uninstall I believe only partially successful. I can't now install at all

Hi,

I wanted to update my Garmin navi, I hadn't done that for about 8 months or so.

I'm using Windows 10, which I keep up to date (automatic updates). I first tried starting Garmin Express, which I have installed already. No luck. I see no windows popping up. Nothing.

I downloaded the latest Garmin Express, and tried to install (upgrade) it. But nothing. When clicking on it, no popup window comes nothing.

I tried uninstalling the existing Garmin Express, using the available Windows uninstal option, in programs. Nothing ... no pop up or nothing. It didn't work. No install happened

I downloaded the MS tool: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17588/windows-fix-problems-that-block-programs-being-installed-or-removed and used this to uninstall. The Windows menu entry is at least gone. But Garmin Express still exists in the list of installed programs. I have there, the option to modify or uninstall. If I click on either of those options, I'm asked if I allow changes etc etc, standard windows question, and when I say "yes", nothing happens ... no pop up etc etc.

But I still can't install the new version of Garmin Express. No pop or nothing when I click on it (either when running as admin or not). I've tried compatibility mode, with Windows 7, it does moan about the version of .net installed. I do have 4.8 installed already. But using Win 8 or Win XP SP3 I see no pop ups.

I have a road trip planned soon, and want to update to the latest maps ...

I have the instll log file (from C:\Users\J Moore\AppData\Local\Temp), for when no compatibility is set here below. But I see no obvious errors. Do you guys see errors ?

  • Do a full uninstall then install from Garmins webpage, see various threads that explain how

  • Well I've gone through a few routines I've found on this forum. But no luck.

I've followed: Removing Garmin Software and Garmin Registry Keys in Windows: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=CNYikpxnK73h9lU6YXTGr5

and Remove the Garmin Express config data: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=9G1aJHKuFmAr5AcXDyFS87

I still can't uninstall completely, or install Garmin Express.

I have not uninstalled any other Garmin products, such as Ant Drivers. I don't want to perhaps break more than what is broken !

I have had some luck with safe mode though. In safe mode, I do see a pop up. Put after a few seconds, the install fails.

It seems to be that vc_redist.x86.exe can't be executed. So a permissions problem. But I don't know how to solve that.

The other question is also, is something stopping the install ? I have bitdefender and malwarebytes. In safe more, they are disabled. But so are many other things too.

Any idea how to install Garmin Express in Safe Mode ? What else could I do ?

I've attached the log file, of a safe mode install, showing what looks like to be a permissions problem.

  • FYI: That is not the full log file, it just shows where I think the problem is now in safe mode

  • Have you tried downloading the exe file and then running it in administrator mode?

  • Yes. Tried that. Didn't make a difference. But I did get a bit further ... I'll post an update.

  • So ... I experimented with safe mode, and enabled installing in safe mode. This worked !

But ... Garmin express won't launch. It seems to be killed off. It starts, and for a couple of seconds displays the Garmin Express banner, but that dies away. Looking at the tray icon, this is "there", but disapears when I roll my mouse pointer over it.

I went back to safe mode, and express does work in safe mode ... so something is killing it off.

I have malwarebytes and bitdefender installed (both have exclusions rules so they don't fight with each other). Even when I stop malwarebytes, and disable bitdefender, it didn't help. Bitdefender seems difficult to turn off though. I'm not convinced its totally off.

But, both programs do not give a pop up to say they are stopping Garmin Express, so I'm not sure if one of them is responsible. I will have to check their logs in depth.

But I can't think what else would kill Garmin Express ? In safe mode, no networking, it launches fine.

Where are the logs located for Garmin Express, so I can checj that it isnt killing itself ?

Can someone tell me where the logs are stored ?

  • If you also need to install in safe mode. Use the following commands to set this up (while in safe mode), using the command prompt

    REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\MSIServer" /VE /T REG_SZ /F /D "Service"

    REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Network\MSIServer" /VE /T REG_SZ /F /D "Service"

    net start msiserver

  • Well I guess I have got as far as I can get. Can Garmin support help here please ?

I have a log file from when starting in safe mode, and a log file when starting in "normal" mode.

What is missing from the normal mode start, is the following:

It seems that the client app is never lauched, unless in safe mode.

I have uninstalled both Malwarebytes and bitdefender, and that did not make a difference. They are not killing Garmin Express.

So either Garmin Express is not happy about something, and doesn't start the client app, or something else is killing Garmin Express. From all the log files I have looked at, the stop in the same place. It looks to me that the Client is not working correctly. Could this be a resources issue ? There is more than enough memory and disk space, but could there be an interrup clash or something.

Any help from Garmin here, would be good. Like is it possible to turn up the debug level, so more is reported in the log ?

  • Call Garmin, that's the quickest way to get help with something like this.

  • Success !!! Its the graphics card ....

I have a Dell laptop, with intel integrated graphics and also an Nvidia GeForce GT 525M. Its a relatively old laptop, but works fine.

In Windows 10, I can select the default graphics card. I use Nvidia, so that Base Camp runs in 3D. 3D isn't supported by the Intel card.

But ... if I run Garmin Express with the default graphics card, it dies. So I've now added an exception in the Nvidia settings, so that express.exe will use the integrated intel card.

This works. Although, it seenme because the installer also fails to run, and the uninstaller too, then those also need to be run with the integrated graphics.

I'm now updating the map on my device and also on the laptop too. Lets see if that completely works. There may be other Garmin processes that won't run with the Nvidia card.

Strange that Garmin Express won't work with the Nvidia card. I have a solution, though Garmin should really investigate why a simple program (or what appears to be simple in terms of graphics requirements) won't run with the Nvidia GeForce GT 525M
