Problem loading map onto Nuvi2599.

Map file is going to PC hard drive and not device even though it says it's sending it to SD card. I have been on chat with Garmin and done everything they have suggested including formatting the SD card but after every update (which is taking around 4 hours each time) the device says Map Data Not Available.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • What's sending it to the SD card?  Express?  If so look at the card, first is it formatted FAT32.  If it is are the map files there?  You should see a folder named Garmin with a large .img file (GBs) and two small files, a .unl and a .gma

If they are there run JaVaWa's Device Manager and see what it says about the maps files, it's possible you have a faulty sd card.

    Hi SUSSAMB,

    Thank you for your reply.

I'm using the latest version of Garmin Express. The card is formatted to FAT32 It's a 32GB card but it is empty. When we left the UK it had the full map of Europe on it, I hadn't done any updates since I bought the device. It worked fine until I went to put an address in Italy in it and it said Italy was not available! When I asked Garmin Chat about it yesterday it transpired that it only had Europe North on it, despite never having been updated. Weird. The Garmin Chat guys said to format the card and now there is nothing at all on it.

I have run another update today and again I got the message on the left. The map is on my C: drive. Obviously I'd like to sort out the problem but as we're in Italy for a couple of months I'd be happy if I could simply transfer or copy the map from the PC to the device but I don't know how to do that.

    Any thoughts?

  • I'd try another card. Other option is to use BaseCamp to send the map to your device if, as you say, the map is on your PC.

Thanks SUSSAMB. I'll try the Basecamp option first. I know the map is on the C: drive because the free space has reduced by 8GB but can you tell me how to get it from the C: drive into Basecamp?

If this fails then as you say, I'll get a new SD card and try with Express again.

    Thank you.

  • Well if Express put it there it'll be because you selected to install it for BaseCamp in Installation  options, so it'll show in BaseCamp. To get it to your device right click your nuvi in BaseCamp, select install maps and follow the instructions.

Or are you talking about the files Express installs rather than a map?

That's the thing... I didn't select it to install to Basecamp. I had the Nuvi connected and it said it would load the file onto the SD card in the device but it didn't.

I've found the folders on the C: drive

and I've copied Map_Map.EU.2020.20 directly onto the SD card via the SD card slot on my PC so I don't think the SD card is faulty. However, when I put the SD card into the Nuvi it says Map Data Is Not Available

  • Well that's not the map, it's the files used by Express to compile the map file. Run Express again, select under installation options Install to PC for BaseCamp.  If that completes ok follow my instructions above. Note this will only install the map file, and should be regarded as a temporary fix.

Just a thought while Express is doing its thing.....The USB cable I'm using is the one I use for my Garmin GPSMap 62S, not the one that came with the Nuvi. Could that be the problem?

  • Possibly, although both should be data cables.
