Blocked from English Language update on new NuviCam due to "Not Enough Space" error

Brand new factory sealed NuviCam.

Simply want to update.

Ran update, it updated maps, then I went to finish by installing the English Language update which is 471 mb, and I get an error that there isn't enough internal storage.

I have a 64 gig card inserted for video, and a 32 gig card inserted for maps. Both are Sandisk Extreme Pro cards.

Contacted support. They told me that the English Language update can ONLY be installed to Internal Storage, and to delete all language folders in Internal Storage under "Help" except American English and that would free enough space.

It didn't. Even after deleting all of the folders that support told me to, I only have 242 megs free on Internal Storage and I need 471.

I have now learned that unlike the TomTom software which allows users to move maps to the SD card, Garmin does not. What I now read that I was supposed to have done is "tricked" the Garmin Express software by filling up the Garmin internal storage with garbage files so that it would be forced to use the SD card. How could I have known to do such a ridiculous step as a new user?

I did some searching and found instructions to use "Garmin Map Updater" to re-install only a region of the maps to the Garmin, then fill Internal Storage with garbage files, then use Garmin Express to install the full maps and it would use the SD card, then I could delete the garbage files. Garmin Map Updater however blocked me, giving me options to exit, go to Garmin.com (REAL useful), or enter a product key. To find the product key for the currently installed map, I'm supposed to go to https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myMapsHome.htm. Unfortunately, it does not give me a product key. This is what I instead see.

So, I guess I am now completely screwed out of this English Language update until the next map update, at which point I guess I could do the garbage file trick to force the Nuvicam to use the SD card, and pray it works.

The fact that there isn't a "Move maps to SD card" function in the software is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.

I see now I have made a mistake switching from TomTom to Garmin.

What is Web Updater? First I've heard of it, again I'm a new user. I tried running "Garmin Map Updater" (http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.exe) and it didn't work. When I ran that, I get options to exit, go to Garmin.com, or enter a product key. To find the product key for the currently installed map, I'm supposed to go to https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myMapsHome.htm. Unfortunately, it does not give me a product key. This is what I instead see.

I'll have to wait to try Web Updater, as I'm now headed into my work week. Should I be running that instead of Garmin Express?
  • WebUpdater was there before GE was introduced. As far as I'm concerned still works.

You try this in parallel with, rather than instead of GE.
  • What bothers me in all is this your total device capacity as reported here:

Why is this stubbornly 7.2GB less that 14.2GB total capacity that I have.

I wonder if the op has a virus of some sort? Never heard of space disappearing like this or all the issues he seems to have.

I'm 99% certain the computer I ran the update on is virus free. It's Windows 10 Home with the latest updates. The only anti-virus that is running when I run Garmin Express is Windows Defender. Maybe I should disable it?

Can anyone confirm if the NuviCam LMTHD's internal storage is supposed to actually be 14 gigs, and not 7? Krzemien linked a device that appears to be for a different locality or region (NuviCam LMTD), so that's why I'm uncertain about what he says with regards to the space. When I contacted support, they didn't seem to think there was anything strange about the 7 gig internal storage size.

At the moment I am only able to run WebUpdater Legacy on an older XP computer. I did just try it and it seemed to work and said there were no updates available. I checked the drives sizes and they are the same... 7 gigs on internal storage.

It doesn't sound like WebUpdater updates maps... the text here seems to imply that it only updates firmware.

I'll try the WebUpdater 2.5.7 on the Win10 computer when I can find the time.

Maybe this is an issue with the vendor? I purchased from "TipTopDeals" from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WTIFK4W

It does appear to be a genuine device. Maybe it's refurbished or something? The vendor is claiming they're new: https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list.../condition=all
  • Webupdater doesn't update Maps, K suggested it only to see if it resolved that strange English update.

OK, got it. I'll try the 2.5.7 on the Win10 computer and see if it returns the same result as the legacy ("no updates available").
  • Worth also checking with Garmin Support total internal memory capacity - there indeed might be a difference between US & EU market (I doubt) and/or production batches (more likely - mine's actually a replacement unit as the original one dropped videos and recorded images upside-down every now and then).

Can't find anything substantial on the Internet, although found some archive auction links here:

    https://archiwum.allegro.pl/oferta/g...881315189.html
    https://archiwum.allegro.pl/oferta/g...433423142.html

indicating that EU models were indeed 14GB in size:

Wbudowana pami?? na mapy: wewn?trzny dysk SSD (~14GB)

EDITED TO ADD: Something else attracted my attention: you changed the device mode to Mass Storage mode rather than remained on MTP Auto Detect. Any reasons why?

If that's part of your troubleshooting, then understood and fine. If not, then perhaps you'd be better off reverting back to the previous mode? I only had to do it once, I think, when GE lousily left previous maps installed on my device and I had to remove these manually.

Obviously it should not make any difference but hey...!

Mass storage was for troubleshooting. And I did have to go into .System at #9 above because Garmin Express decided NOT to use the Micro SD card (even though the maps installed to the Micro SD card for the first update), and ate all Internal Storage, leaving only 34 megs free. #9 was the only time I touched anything in .System.

Is there any kind of diagnostic test I can run from the developer menu to check map / system integrity?
  • No, but you may find Device Manager from JaVaWa useful http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html
