Blocked from English Language update on new NuviCam due to "Not Enough Space" error

Brand new factory sealed NuviCam.

Simply want to update.

Ran update, it updated maps, then I went to finish by installing the English Language update which is 471 mb, and I get an error that there isn't enough internal storage.

I have a 64 gig card inserted for video, and a 32 gig card inserted for maps. Both are Sandisk Extreme Pro cards.

Contacted support. They told me that the English Language update can ONLY be installed to Internal Storage, and to delete all language folders in Internal Storage under "Help" except American English and that would free enough space.

It didn't. Even after deleting all of the folders that support told me to, I only have 242 megs free on Internal Storage and I need 471.

I have now learned that unlike the TomTom software which allows users to move maps to the SD card, Garmin does not. What I now read that I was supposed to have done is "tricked" the Garmin Express software by filling up the Garmin internal storage with garbage files so that it would be forced to use the SD card. How could I have known to do such a ridiculous step as a new user?

I did some searching and found instructions to use "Garmin Map Updater" to re-install only a region of the maps to the Garmin, then fill Internal Storage with garbage files, then use Garmin Express to install the full maps and it would use the SD card, then I could delete the garbage files. Garmin Map Updater however blocked me, giving me options to exit, go to Garmin.com (REAL useful), or enter a product key. To find the product key for the currently installed map, I'm supposed to go to https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myMapsHome.htm. Unfortunately, it does not give me a product key. This is what I instead see.

So, I guess I am now completely screwed out of this English Language update until the next map update, at which point I guess I could do the garbage file trick to force the Nuvicam to use the SD card, and pray it works.

The fact that there isn't a "Move maps to SD card" function in the software is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.

I see now I have made a mistake switching from TomTom to Garmin.
  • Well that's possible. If it isn't new that might explain the second map file. I'd be tempted to delete that Map folder and see what happens, or if you're concerned copy it to your PC then delete it, so you could always put it back if necessary.

This is the actual product page from where I purchased the unit:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WTIFK4W

    It's the NuviCam LMTHD.

Now the vendor shows they have 20 units available... so I might try the return / exchange option, if I can, so I can try the garbage files trick.

I contacted support about this. I mentioned moving the JCV folder to the card, and also deleting the Map folder and the gmapprom.* files, running the English Language update, then doing the map reinstall. I gave him the directory listing on pastebin, specifically mentioning if the Map folder should be in .System and if the April 2018 date stamps are correct. I also asked what the English Language update is.

They replied and said the directory listing is 100% correct, the Map folder is supposed to be there and the date stamps are correct. They said do not delete or move anything in .System, the only suggestion they offered is deleting all but one voice and vehicle, which I tried (backing up first), and it STILL does not leave enough space. I only get ~420 megs free, and I need 471. Finally, they provided no answer as to what the 471 meg English Language update actually is.

So official Garmin support cannot solve this. They seem to be giving form replies. My experience is that when a Support service for a company starts replying this way (instead of actually helping) that is the point to give up on them as a company. I'm guessing most of their money is made from industrial sales and licensing, and the consumer retail device market is probably now only a tiny part of their business.

I was able to do a return / exchange on Amazon, so I'm just going to go that route. I don't like the idea of having to "hack" and move all kinds of stuff around on a brand new device... it should update correctly and work correctly from the start.

So before I do anything I will copy dummy files to Internal Storage to use space, so hopefully the maps will get installed to the SD card. Then I can delete the dummy files, and the rest of the updates should work and I should be good to go. (A ridiculous step to have to take IMHO; the software should at the very least prompt the user with the option to use the SD card on a map update.)

Just wish I had it on time for the car I'm finishing.

I'll post back with how successful this plan was. I have a sense that I'm going to encounter more problems. But hopefully not! I guess this is part of the reason people don't want to use standalone GPS devices any more. You save on WiFi data, but how much data does GPS use really? If you have problems with an app on your phone, you just try a different app until you have what you want. I would think this would motivate GPS device manufacturers to make their user experience better and trouble free. But in this case, Garmin has OVER simplified things, and now the user is not able to "just let the software do its thing," as this results in mismanaged space. (Internal storage gets consumed without regard for optional updates that need to use Internal storage space, even when there is plenty of space available on the inserted SD card that is there to prevent this exact sort of problem.) From what I've been reading so far, Garmin is unlikely to address this. Again I'm guessing they really don't care so much any more about the retail standalone GPS market. I won't be surprised to see standalone GPS devices discontinued in the coming years.
  • Your problem is very unusual but would have been resolved if you'd taken the advice given here. Good luck with the replacement.
  • I am willing to wager that ~8GB of memory was mysteriously missing on this device. I hope that the replacement you get (it's a good satnav by the way, and with large, quite bright screen. I am very happy with it) does have full 14.2 GB available space.

The NuviCam you linked shows as part number LMTD, and appears to be the European model. Mine is the LMTHD and is the American model. That could be why it's different?

Anyways, the .JCV folder move probably would have worked, but since this is brand new device and I'm able to exchange it, it will allow me to use the "dummy file method" to hopefully update the device with the maps on the SD card right from the start, so I don't have to delete and move anything.
  • Nah, it's the traffic received that I'm guessing is different between EU and US markets (EU is via DAB, hence 'TD', whereas yours is HD Digital Traffic [whatever that means], hence 'THD'). I sincerely doubt that units differ.

Let us know how the replacement unit works - and once you get it: check how much total space is reported by your OS.

    I got the replacement device.

In short, it didn't go well. It was a complete and utter nightmare. I just spent an epic 6 hour Sunday night babysitting this absolutely awful bug ridden device and software to TRY to get a simple, proper update, instead of watching the Super Bowl with my family. Yes, I simply don't have time in the rest of my busy week to do this.

I have had GPS's for about the past 20 years, starting with the Garmin Street Pilot III, the first color GPS. I have NEVER, EVER had THIS MUCH trouble with a BRAND NEW DEVICE, RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX for a SIMPLE FIRST TIME UPDATE.

To summarize, I **THINK** I have a working device. The maps APPEAR to be on the external SD card, and I have 1.73 gigs free on internal storage. But, the EXACT SAME 472 MB ENGLISH LANGUAGE UPDATE shows up EVERY TIME I restart Garmin Express. I can install it now and it no longer says there isn't enough free space. But, after installing, the free space on internal storage stays exactly the same, and the SAME English Language update shows up after restarting Garmin Express. I installed all other updates from the list and they DID consume space and don't show up anymore. It's down to these updates, which keep showing back up:

This would seem to indicate that the updates are probably already installed, and this whole thread, this whole exchange, and this whole six hours I spent with this nightmare device tonight was completely unnecessary. But NO ONE, not here, not Garmin support, could tell me what this English Language update is supposed to even be. I did mention previously that with my previous NuviCam (the one I exchanged for this one), I moved a file off of internal storage and tried the English Language update and the same thing happened... Garmin Express stated installed successfully, but it consumed no free space and just reappeared after starting Garmin Express. But no one suggested that meant that this update was already installed or whatever. It *was* suggested that this update "seems to bother me." Well, yes, it's a brand new $300 standalone device, and I want to simply update it, and when it says there is an update and I can't install it, it bothers me.

So, I have no idea how accurate this is, because I was frustrated out of my mind, but this is what I *think* I did with the brand new device: 1. Inserted 64 gig Micro SD card in video slot, and 32 gig Micro SD card in map slot.

    2. Powered on device and charged. Went into diagnostic (upper right on volume screen for 10 seconds) and changed to mass storage.

    3. Connected device to computer. Checked drives, all show up as they did with the previous NuviCam (that I exchanged for this one), with 7 gigs free on internal storage.

    4. Used Dummy File Creator to create a 1 gig non compressible file on internal storage ( \Garmin\Documents\OM_DE.pdf ), so about 60 MB was now free on internal storage.

    5. Ran update. Firmware updated OK. Maps updated and prompted to use Micro SD card. Update went OK.

    6. After restarting Garmin Express, it showed there was another map update available. What? I ran the update. It returned a RED ERROR MESSAGE before completing. WTF?

    7. Tried the update twice more. Two more of the same errors.

    8. Deleted dummy file \Garmin\Documents\OM_DE.pdf. Ran update. Updated succeeded. However, after checking drives, the maps on the Micro SD card were still there, but this second update appears to have installed to internal storage! WTF! It left only 34 megs free on internal storage, and there was now a 670 MB English Language update (that can only install to internal storage). What. The. Hell.

    9. Out of sheer frustration, deleted everything on Micro SD card, and deleted gmapprom.img, gmapprom.gma, and gmapprom.unl off internal storage.

    10. Now had to use Dummy File Creator to create 3+ gigabyte dummy file in \Garmin\Documents\. This IS a data transfer, even though it's random data generation, so had to wait for this to complete.

    11. Started Garmin Express with the idea to use the Map Reinstall option. Instead it prompted for a map update. It again prompted to use the Micro SD card. It got to 50%, then as the data transfer part ran, before it got to 100%, I get a RED ERROR MESSAGE again.

    12. There is now even more free space on internal storage. Again used Dummy File Creator to fill up space in \Garmin\Documents so there was ~60 MB free.

    13. Completely uninstalled Garmin Express. Manually deleted all Garmin folders from computer (including downloads), and deleted Garmin registry keys.

    14. Rebooted.

    15. Installed Garmin Express.

    16. Rebooted.

    17. Attached NuviCam, ran Garmin Express, it now says maps are up to date. I know they are probably corrupted since it errored before it got to 100%.

    18. Used the option to reinstall maps. This redownloaded everything. It got to 50% and started the data transfer. It showed it transferring at about 20 MB/sec. As this ran, it gradually slowed down. By the time it got to 100%, it was at 6.4 MB/sec.

    19. Although it got to 100%, it still returned a RED ERROR MESSAGE again.

    20. Deleted dummy files.

    21. Went in to other updates, selected everything and installed.

    22. Safely disconnected device.

    23. Powered up device. It detected installs, and green bar went across several times with no errors.

    24. Powered off device, connected to computer, device powers on, start Garmin Express.

    25. It shows maps up to date.

    26. Go into other updates. As above, I am unable to clear everything here. Garmin Express always shows the below as available every time it's restarted. They install successfully, but appear to not consume any free space after install. Are they already installed?

I tried driving with the device. Maps appear to be fine, but the Auto Zoom is real problem. I see no way to control it, and it always ends up zooming so far out that it looks like the map isn't even moving. I don't like that at all.

This is so much that I don't even want to know what kind of form reply support will give... delete language files and vehicles again maybe?

The device APPEARS to be working OK, but I have no idea if it really IS working OK because of the error message. I have no idea why Garmin Express keeps telling me I have the same other update available.

The worst experience I have EVER had with ANY GPS device, EVER.

    Info's (in case anyone cares):

Free space and directory listing of internal storage on brand new device out of the box, with only the 1 GB dummy file added as \Garmin\Documents\OM_DE.pdf:

    https://justpaste.it/2xyrz

The error message I received from #19 above (after I reinstalled Garmin Express; it's the same zero-information-whatsoever general error I got every time it errored):

Directory listing of internal storage after I was done with everything above:

    https://justpaste.it/4d04m

Directory listing of Micro SD card after I was done with everything above:

    https://justpaste.it/2wztz

Finally, here is the contents of C:\ProgramData\Garmin, minus the download folder. It has detailed logs but I have no idea how to interpret them. This is AFTER the Garmin Express reinstall, so it only captures after #15 above:

    https://tommycatkins.com/2019/garmin.zip

Again, I reiterate, ALL of the above, ALL of it, is me opening a brand new NuviCam, installing Garmin Express, and then simply trying to update it completely with maps going to the Micro SD card, so Garmin Express can start and show that there are no new updates. That's it.
  • What bothers me in all is this your total device capacity as reported here:

    https://i.imgur.com/wuwF3DH.png

Why is this stubbornly 7.2GB less that 14.2GB total capacity that I have? See one of my previous posts.

With regards to these optional updates: I think I might have received them at some stage and very long time ago either. Worth trying WebUpdater:

    https://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp
    https://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27

And see what it finds / reports.
