Blocked from English Language update on new NuviCam due to "Not Enough Space" error

Brand new factory sealed NuviCam.

Simply want to update.

Ran update, it updated maps, then I went to finish by installing the English Language update which is 471 mb, and I get an error that there isn't enough internal storage.

I have a 64 gig card inserted for video, and a 32 gig card inserted for maps. Both are Sandisk Extreme Pro cards.

Contacted support. They told me that the English Language update can ONLY be installed to Internal Storage, and to delete all language folders in Internal Storage under "Help" except American English and that would free enough space.

It didn't. Even after deleting all of the folders that support told me to, I only have 242 megs free on Internal Storage and I need 471.

I have now learned that unlike the TomTom software which allows users to move maps to the SD card, Garmin does not. What I now read that I was supposed to have done is "tricked" the Garmin Express software by filling up the Garmin internal storage with garbage files so that it would be forced to use the SD card. How could I have known to do such a ridiculous step as a new user?

I did some searching and found instructions to use "Garmin Map Updater" to re-install only a region of the maps to the Garmin, then fill Internal Storage with garbage files, then use Garmin Express to install the full maps and it would use the SD card, then I could delete the garbage files. Garmin Map Updater however blocked me, giving me options to exit, go to Garmin.com (REAL useful), or enter a product key. To find the product key for the currently installed map, I'm supposed to go to https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myMapsHome.htm. Unfortunately, it does not give me a product key. This is what I instead see.

So, I guess I am now completely screwed out of this English Language update until the next map update, at which point I guess I could do the garbage file trick to force the Nuvicam to use the SD card, and pray it works.

The fact that there isn't a "Move maps to SD card" function in the software is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.

I see now I have made a mistake switching from TomTom to Garmin.

Thanks very much for that link!

I does say there are some errors, but these are just "Maps are in the wrong folder" errors that don't apply to the device (i.e., NuviCam stores maps on the SD card under "Garmin" folder; JaVaWa thinks it should be in "Maps" folder).

I did the "Check for Corrupt Data Files" option, but it immediately returned a response that no corrupt files were found. (It didn't actually thoroughly "scan" the files which obviously would take some time.)

Here's what it shows for the maps installed on the NuviCam:

    Internal Storage:

    SD Card:

(Again "X" errors are both "map is in the wrong folder", I moved no maps myself, so this is exactly where Garmin Express put them.)

Second, I don't have a nuvicam but I wouldn't on other devices expect to see a Map folder in the .system folder, and it appears to have a large map file in it. You also have a map file in the .system folder, which is where I'd expect it to be. Strangely both dates don't tally with your comment on having recently updated the map file.

Just to answer this, according to the JaVaWa application, the map file under .system\Map is a Foursquare POI database.
  • Ah that explains that then :)
