Garmin Express grinds to a halt updating maps

Despite several topics alluding to similar problems on the forums I can’t find an actual solution to this issue.

I’m trying to update maps to 2017.10 on my Edge 1000 and after six or more attempts Garmin Express continues to grind to a halt somewhere between 73.3% with time remaining of 18 minutes and 77.8% with time remaining of 15 minutes! As far as I can see the software simply stops doing anything.

I’ve updated Express to the latest version, changed USB cables, tried with and without firewall / virus protection and nothing stops this inevitable cease in all activity.

To be clear, this occurs during step 2 of 2: Updating Maps while the software reports it is copying files.... So I don’t know if the hang is during download of the maps or upload to the Edge.

I’m on a 100mb internet connection, with an i7 windows 10 PC so I’m well above the required spec to perform this operation.

The next strange thing is while in this state navigation in Windows Explorer starts to behave very strangely. It either goes into not responding mode or takes an absolute age to respond as if the whole system is being taxed to it limits?!? It’s not as the Task Manager reports minimal CPU activity (specifically 0% for Express) and virtual no internet traffic leading me to believe that Express has simply stopped?!?

I’m out of ideas as far as an explanation or solution is concerned (with the expection of trying the whole process on my work PC tomorrow which fortunately I can) so any suggestions, explanations or ideas would be very much appreciated!!!
  • There's just been an update to Express so ensure you update that and try again. Not sure how long you're leaving Express until you decide it's ground to a halt but it can take a while to update a map. This FAQ may also help

  • Yeah, I've updated to 6.1.1.0 prior to all this.

Time wise, it's generally states about an hour and a half to complete the update when the update begins. It then gets to the 70% mark in about thirty to forty minutes. I have then left it anything from two hours up to seven hours (as per my last attempt overnight last night) and it froze at 42 minutes to go 73% complete. It was exactly the same this morning.

After I left my first post last night it did hang for a good hour or so and then very strangeley started to move again for about ten minutes in which time it moved on about 3% but then completely stopped again over night????

Thanks for support link but I' aslo worked through all those troubleshooting options prior to posting.

So, I'm going to try it again today on my work PC to see if the results are any different but in the meantime any more suggestions would great. Thanks for your help SUSSAMB!

  • Wonder how you did solve this as i see the exact same behave with the 2020 map on my edge 1030. UPDATE: This was fixed by simply using a different USB port on the computer.

  • Glad you resolved it.
