Updating Express fails

Whenever I try to update Express from either my Windows 7 or Windows 10 PC's I get a Failed Downloading Update message and the express log file has the entry below. The only way I can update is uninstall the current version, manually download the new installer from the web and install all over again. Can anyone shed some light on why this is happening and how to overcome it.

Cheers HD

  • Updating Express from within application fails

I been having the same problem for years and many of my friends have the same problem too. Gamin has no idea how to fix it.
  • Always worked perfectly for me. Probably a PC issue. Do you keep your OS updated?
  • I also have the problem: for me the download progress bar gets to about 80% (always the same) and it fails with unhelpful message 'Download failed'. I have not investigated the log - I would have to hunt for it.

This has been happening for all my Express updates for many many months - and I have posted about this before. I now let it fail once, then try a normal download outside Express, and then install. This works for me, both the download & install.

This is using Win10pro, which is up to date.

Then how is it 7 of my bike club friends have the same problem. I have four computers up to date and they all fail. This been going on for 3 years now. I tried every thing to make this work. Just wish I didn't have to do it manually.
  • Can't explain why you are having problems but again, none here. And my Windows 10 is running under parallels installed on a a MacBook Pro and an iMac, as well as a standalone laptop.
  • I posted about this problem several months ago but the post was closed with no resolution or even any help (https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?359936-GE-required-update-4-1-25-0-fails&p=895281). Why was it closed?

I now find it wants to update to v5.0.0.0 and I am still getting an update failure. The current version of GE is 4.1.19.0 and it is running on Windows 7 Home with all updates current.
  • Diagnosing individual issues ranges from difficult to impossible via a forum. Most likely you have an issue with your system so your best bet is to call Garmin support so they can take a detailed look at your set up.
  • I understand your point but this is clearly NOT an individual issue. The messages above tell me this has been happening for years to a large number of people on a range of different PCs and using a range of OS's.

Good for you that you are able to get your updates but many of us can't and to point the finger at the users' PCs when there are so many with so many different setups is most unhelpful.

What is Garmin doing about this widespread problem?

And why was my previous thread closed with no resolution or explanation?
  • No idea why your previous thread was closed but to say the problem is widespread based on a small handful of issues compared with the hundreds of thousands using Express is misleading.

The fact it happens to a few with various OS etc points to individual issues with certain systems. You'll find similar issues on any forum covering any software. I don't believe anyone has yet produced something that works on any PC regardless of how it's configured, what else it's running etc etc.
  • Then what will it take to get some help on this failure?
