Updating Express fails

Whenever I try to update Express from either my Windows 7 or Windows 10 PC's I get a Failed Downloading Update message and the express log file has the entry below. The only way I can update is uninstall the current version, manually download the new installer from the web and install all over again. Can anyone shed some light on why this is happening and how to overcome it.

Cheers HD

  • Here a fix to try... worked for me

Go to http://support.microsoft.com/mats/program_install_and_uninstall/ and click the Download button

Click Run in Internet Explorer, or download and open MicrosoftFixit.ProgramInstallUninstall.RNP.Run.exe1
Click Accept in the license agreement
Follow the provided instructions to select and uninstall the particular application
    When uninstalling Garmin Express select:
    Garmin Express
    Garmin Express Tray
    Elevated Installer
Garmin Update Services (skip if not present)
    ANT Drivers Installer x64
When the application displays Troubleshooting Complete, close the application
This program will need to be run again for each item on the list to be uninstalled

1This software is third-party and not created by Garmin. The software is licensed and created by Microsoft.

Once this is complete you will need to download the GE program from Garmin.com

    Problem solved

I contacted Garmin in UK - They solved the problem .. what they told me to do :

    Delete the user configuration folder:
    1. Press the Windows key + R
    2. Type %localappdata%
    3. Right-click the Garmin_Ltd._or_its_subsid folder
    4. Click Delete
    5. Click Yes if prompted to confirm the deletion
Install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.2 (Windows Vista, 7, and 8 only):
    1. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/download/details.aspx?id=53344
    2. Follow the instructions to download and install the update
    3. Restart the computer after installing
After following these steps, Garmin Express should launch successfully.

and it did .... :-) Happy Garmin user

I have had this issue off and on. Works for a while, then magically the "update fail" re-appears.

I just go to Garmin and download and install the new version. It seems to remove and over-wright the old version.

I will try clearing the %localappdata% next time to see if that helps.

    good to know

    Hi,

My issue was that installing the latest version manually - did not resolve the issue ... I even tried the Microsoft uninstall utility ... Rang Garmin and they suggested what I just posted .. and that did the trick ... Maybe it was the latest NET update or the removal of old data or both that did it ... anyway ... now it works ... lets see for how long :-)
