Garmin Express/Connect wont see my Dakota 20

I haven't synced my Dakota for a long time as I've not really been out much but I decided I'll start getting out again.
Now my setup is as follows:-
OS= PC Windows 10 64bit with Edge browser
Dakota 20 with latest firmware
Now if I open Express manually then it opens up fine and recognises my device. I also see my device in "This Pc" which enables me to explore the folders etc.
But Express doesn't open automatically when I connect my device???
Also if I open Connect and try and sync my device, it prompts me to install express (which is already installed).
I have installed communicator.
Connect lets me manually import GPX from my garmin but I want it to work as it should.
Any ideas?
Cheers

  • Anybody? I've tried everything and still no joy!!!
  • Right, before I throw out of the window, I want to try one last thing....
I want to master reset/format the unit to exactly how it came from Garmin. I've tried the master reset option but all that does is remove user created files, and all modified files still remain. I want to completely wipe everything and restore all files to factory default.
Anybody know how I can do this?
    Cheers
  • Master reset is the only way I know.

Rather than throw it out the window throw it to me :D

But wait a mo until the Express team can comment as they may be able to help. With the holidays on it might not be until Monday.
  • Cheers mate,
Its a cracking little device to be honest and suits my needs perfectly, but this issue is a problem for me and its doing my head in to the point of frustration!
  • One thing you could try is use IE instead of Edge, as I'm not sure if Edge works with the Garmin plug in. IE is included with Win 10 but it's not easy to find, but a Google search should explain how to find it.
  • Just tried and still no luck?!
  • Then I'm out of ideas, need to hope the Express team can help.
  • Just checked device manager whilst the Dakota is plugged in and it seems there may be an issue with the driver!
I see the yellow "hazard" symbol next to my garmin and when I click properties I see : This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31).
But trying to find the drivers is proving to be a bit of a nightmare. Theres no roll back option and it cant automatically find one?

Edit: It shows twice in device manager, Under "Disc Drives" which seems to be working ok and under "Portable devices" which is where the error is.
  • Update:-A little progress.
I have uninstalled express and installed an older version and it now automatically detects my device and fires up on connection.
Now its just a case of connect not seeing my device.

I would be happy to help you with this. You can upload data to Connect from the Dakota 20 but you have to do it manually. Garmin Express is used only to update the software on the Dakota. It will not link to your Connect account and upload data automatically. Please see the FAQ below.

    How do I manually upload data from USB Mass Storage devices to Garmin Connect?https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={b16302a0-02ac-11de-515b-000000000000}

The Dakota is a mass storage device so the computer itself uses Microsoft Mass Storage USB drivers to detect the device. There is nothing related to Garmin software that would keep the Dakota from showing up as a drive letter, Garmin E:, F:, or G: etc.. when connected. If the software on the Dakota is currently up to date then you could uninstall Garmin Express. There hasn't been a software release since 2013 for the Dakota 20 and none likely in the near future. If one is released, you would want install the latest version of Garmin Express at that time.

I am sorry for the confusion.
