Garmin Express/Connect wont see my Dakota 20

I haven't synced my Dakota for a long time as I've not really been out much but I decided I'll start getting out again.
Now my setup is as follows:-
OS= PC Windows 10 64bit with Edge browser
Dakota 20 with latest firmware
Now if I open Express manually then it opens up fine and recognises my device. I also see my device in "This Pc" which enables me to explore the folders etc.
But Express doesn't open automatically when I connect my device???
Also if I open Connect and try and sync my device, it prompts me to install express (which is already installed).
I have installed communicator.
Connect lets me manually import GPX from my garmin but I want it to work as it should.
Any ideas?
Cheers

  • Thanks for the reply Curt.
I don't have a problem manually uploading as I can do that fine, its a case of connect not seeing my device. If I go to the "devices" tab within connect it tells me that I have no device connected and that I need to install Garmin express?
I used to have an edge 500 and that used to auto import all new entries which is what I'm wanting to achieve. I know the Dakota is an older model, but I got rid of the edge as I wanted proper mapping and I didn't really use any of the training features of the edge. For me the Dakota is perfect as I can use it for different types of activities and Id just like this part to work as it should.......Or is the Dakota simply not compatable with connect? It would be a shame but no biggy I guess.
    Thanks again

  • Your Dakota won't auto sync with Connect.

The Dakota is compatible in the sense that you can manually upload files but it isn't added to Connect like the fitness models. Connect is really geared towards the fitness models and the Dakota is considered an Outdoor device. It's main supporting program is Garmin BaseCamp.

  • That's great, Cheers.
I prefer connect as a quick way of archiving my tracks with the added benefit of being able to view on my phone (and to be honest Basecamp is ugly and needs a massive overhaul in my opinion).
I can manually add so its not that much of a problem(although my OCDness doesn't like the unknown device field on the track summary:D )
One more thing if you don't mind.... Are you able to obtain fresh default files/folders for the Dakota? as I didn't create a backup when new and I have some random files in there now and would like to start afresh.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • First time I've heard Basecamp called ugly :)

I've used it for years and find it more than adequate, latest versions are far superior to the early days, so if you've not tried it recently you could give it a go.

Only way to restore your GPS to its original state is a master reset, but note that this won't necessarily delete these 'random files', whatever they might be?
  • To be honest mate I think basecamp is cluttered and just not very intuitive. It reminds me of an old DOS program my mate knocked up .... Maybe I should give it more time.

There are files that I'm not sure if I can delete and I would just like to start again but will probably just keep it as it is.
    Cheers
