Maps Nuvi 2797 vs 650

Hello all,

I updated the maps on my Nuvi 650 and my Nuvi 2797. However, the maps on the 2797 are version 2016, while the maps on my 650 are version 2015.

Can someone please tell me why the 2016 version is not on my Nuvi 650, but only on the 2797?

I have a 4 GB SD card in the Nuvi 650 and it has 1.7 GB of free space, so it should be able to handle the 2015 maps.

I used Garmin Express to update both units.

Thank you once again for your help.

    1. where does it say that my Nuvi won't accept maps that are larger than 2 GB,

    Here

Assuming you have a lifetime map subscription for the 650 and are eligible for a map update, it is possible that the update failed for the 650. The older 6x0 devices are limited to a maximum file size of 2 GB. Both CN NA and CN Europe are larger than 2 GB, so if you intend to install the full coverage map, you need to follow special procedures to split the map into 2 parts, putting part of it in internal memory and part on SD, making sure that neither part produces a file > 2 GB.

So again, your nuvi will not accept the full map unless you follow the procedure outlined. Install the whole map to your PC, and then split the map between your nuvi and sd card. Folks are trying to help you but you aren't listening. Full detail is in the link I've already posted for you.

Incidentally I don't work for Garmin so it's no good complaining about 'my programs'. However I've used them for years and don't have any issues using them, hopefully now you understand what is required you won't either :)

Instead of having three pieces of software, Mapinstall, Mapupdater and Garmin Express, you should have only ONE that works 100% of the time.

As for this, Garmin Express replaced MapUpdater. MapInstall is for moving maps from PC/Basecamp to a device, and is used for far more than just Garmin mapping. Once you understand what you should be doing you'll see why there is a need for both. Both Express and MapInstall do work 100% of the time for the vast majority of Garmin users.
  • In other forums, I have worked with numerous users of nuvi 3xx/6xx devices who have successfully installed the full NA maps using the procedures stated by sussamb. One good resource for additional information is the FAQ section over on the POI Factory forum.

Thanks......I followed the instructions in your link...again. I tried installing the full map to my computer. So far, it's only allowed me to install the USA Northeast section. That does me no good. And for over 30 hours now, I've been trying to download maps in Garmin Express and it's still frozen at "Estimated time remaining 7 hours 11 minutes". I checked my system and Express.exe*32 is not using any resources, which tells me it's not been downloading for the last 30 hours or so. Can you please confirm for me that the download is working? Can you also please tell me if it is, am I getting the FULL maps? Can you do this from your end and let me know? Every time I try to download maps, the Garmin server freezes up. Can you confirm that this is a problem with the Garmin server? Am I the only one that experiences a lock up during a download? Can you please let me know approximately how long the download should take using DSL? Two days? If so, I'm prepared to wait. It's already been over 30 hours.

By the way, I tried downloading the full map on another computer....my desktop. Guess what? THE DOWNLOAD LOCKED UP TOO!

Thanks for the information. However, the instructions in all of these programs MUST tell the user what each program is used for AND THEY DO NOT. I went from one to the other and I do not recall seeing any statements in any of them advising specifically what to do in my particular case....except for the Garmin Express link you provided. When I followed those instructions, all it allowed me to do was to download the NORTHEAST SECTION of the USA.

AS for Mapinstall, the program must specifically state the it is for as you say, moving maps from the PC to the Nuvi. It does not. Why not? Why do I have to attempt to figure out what each program does and does not do? Why isn't there a statement at the opening of each program that specifically states what the program is to be used for?

Your reply: Both Express and MapInstall do work 100% of the time for the vast majority of Garmin users.
With due respect, that's a double negative. The programs cannot work 100% of the time if they do not do so for ALL Garmin users. Sorry, but this is another example of the confusing wording used by your software people.

A question for you: Why was it necessary for you to modify my account in Garmin Express to allow me the option of purchasing maps? Why was not this an option for me already? Instead, the program said nothing. Another example of poor software programming.

Also....a couple of days ago, I did indeed download the Northeast section of the USA to my Nuvi 650. However, now when I attempt to type in a location in the Northeast to set a map, the only alternative I get is for New Jersey only. I no longer have the option of selecting a location in say, New York or Pennsylvania, etc. Again, poor software design and this makes the unit just about worthless.....after spending $90 for lifetime maps. This had better be fixed with my download, assuming it gets completed and doesn't remain locked up.

I just returned from purchasing a 16 GB SD card. I will put it in the Nuvi 650 and see what happens. Another $20.

Still at 11 hours 7 minutes. Still no resources being used. SHOULD I RESTART THE DOWNLOAD?

I realize you are trying to help and I appreciate your time and energy. But if the Garmin people had set up their systems properly, none of this wasted time would have occurred.

Sorry about the anger. I'll try to cool down. It all depends on whether this current download works. I will keep you advised.
  • Can someone please let me know if my download is indeed working? Are you able to discern this from your end?

Also, can you please tell me if the DL is indeed working, am I getting the full North America map or once again, only the Northeast section?

Can someone please let me know either way if you can determine if my download is working or not and which map?

    Thanks.
  • To everyone who assisted:

I contacted Garmin Support in Kansas City and "Chris" was able to straighten everything out. Sorry I took up your time. I probably should have called them in the first place.

Once again, I thank all of you for your time and energy on this issue.
