Maps Nuvi 2797 vs 650

Hello all,

I updated the maps on my Nuvi 650 and my Nuvi 2797. However, the maps on the 2797 are version 2016, while the maps on my 650 are version 2015.

Can someone please tell me why the 2016 version is not on my Nuvi 650, but only on the 2797?

I have a 4 GB SD card in the Nuvi 650 and it has 1.7 GB of free space, so it should be able to handle the 2015 maps.

I used Garmin Express to update both units.

Thank you once again for your help.
  • The software version on the Nuvi 650 is 4.90
  • Assuming you have a lifetime map subscription for the 650 and are eligible for a map update, it is possible that the update failed for the 650. The older 6x0 devices are limited to a maximum file size of 2 GB. Both CN NA and CN Europe are larger than 2 GB, so if you intend to install the full coverage map, you need to follow special procedures to split the map into 2 parts, putting part of it in internal memory and part on SD, making sure that neither part produces a file > 2 GB.
  • Thank you for the information.
I tried to follow the instruction in your link shown next, but nothing you list is shown in Garmin Express for my Nuvi 650:

I did in fact purchase lifetime maps for my Nuvi 650.

This is what it tells me to do, since I had previously installed an update using the Mapupdate software, I think.

If the update has already been installed to the device previously:
    Open Garmin Express..............I DID THIS.
Select the device to update...........I DID THIS.
Click on Map Options.........THERE ARE NO "MAP OPTIONS" SHOWN FOR MY NUVI 650.
Click on Install to Computer.........ALL THAT IS SHOWN IS "BACKUP FAVORITES" AND "TRANSFER FAVORITES"
    Accept the license agreement.......NOT SHOWN
    Click Install Update
    ........NOWHERE IN SIGHT!

Once again, how do I install the latest (2016) version of maps on my Nuvi 650?
    Thank you for your help.

  • If you're not seeing any map update or install options there is possibly either an issue with your account or you don't have lifetime maps.

Someone from Express team will need to help.

I am sorry for the troubles. The issue concerning your Nuvi 650 was resolved with Product Support back in January of 2015. You purchased the Lifetime Map Update on 01/05/2015 then contacted Product Support about not being able to install Full Coverage on the Nuvi's internal memory. You eventually got the 2015 North America Northeast region installed to the internal memory. Due to the issues with completing the update to your satisfaction and your announcement that you purchased a new GPS, Product Support sent you an email notifying you that the Lifetime Map Update would be refunded. When a map update is refunded it is removed from your myGarmin account. The Lifetime Map Update is no longer activated to the Nuvi and your purchase was refunded to the credit card.

At this point the 2016.20 map update would have to be purchased again, whether it be the Onetime or another Lifetime subscription. I have made a change to the device in myGarmin which will cause Express to offer the map update for purchase. The FAQ article below explains how to split full coverage between the internal memory and an SD card with MapInstall.

    What do I do if my device doesn't support the SD card feature during the Garmin Express map update? https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={a209e880-9319-11e2-65d0-000000000000}

If you have any other questions please contact Product Support by phone as this is not a technical issue with Garmin Express.

Again, I am sorry for the troubles.

  • Thank you Curt for the clarification.

Finally, someone was able to do the research for me on this unit and I sincerely appreciate your help.

I recall having a lot of trouble in the past while attempting to update my Nuvi 650. Your email has refreshed my memory.

I'll take a look at what my options are at this point and make some decisions.

EDIT: I HAVE DECIDED TO UPDATE MY NUVI 650 TO LIFETIME MAPS. MY QUESTION IS WHEN I DO SO, DO I SELECT THAT AN UPDATE HAS PREVIOUSLY BEEN PERFORMED OR HAS NOT BEEN PERFORMED?

    Thanks again.
  • I have just purchased Lifetime maps for my Garmin Nuvi 650, per discussions above.

However, when I attempted to download the 2016 maps for North America, it told me that I do not have sufficient space, despite the fact that I HAVE A 4GB SD CARD INSTALLED in the unit. The map update is 1 GB and I HAVE 1.7 GB AVAILABLE ON MY SD CARD!

The only option the update gives me is to download "Canada and border states". THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. I need the entire 48 lower states in the USA!

Why doesn't Garmin Express recognize my SD card? Is the card too small? If so, can I add a larger card?

If I cannot download all lower 48 states to my Nuvi 650 with a 4 GB SD card, then I will need a refund.

EDIT: I JUST TRIED TO USE "MAPINSTALL" TO UPDATE THE MAPS ON MY NUVI 650 AND IT TELLS ME "No unlocked maps were found for this device". The people who design the software for Garmin are doing a TERRIBLE JOB! Much too complicated and nothing seems to work!
    Now what?

    Thank you.
  • Did you read the posts above? Your nuvi won't accept map files larger than 2Gb. Please see the link I posted that explains what to do.

MapInstall can only move maps that you've installed first to your PC which is why you're getting that message.

Nothing seems to work for you because you're not following the information provided.

    Thanks for your reply.

    1. where does it say that my Nuvi won't accept maps that are larger than 2 GB, AS LONG AS I HAVE AN SD CARD LARGER THAN THAT? What it actually says is that there is a work around for my Nuvi 650 that will allow me to install the FULL North American maps as long as I have an SD card capable of accepting those maps. I have tried to download FULL maps to my computer and it only allows me to install the North East region maps. I've followed this procedure CORRECTLY a number of times. It does not work. I have tried Garmin Express, Mapupdater and Mapinstall. NONE OF THEM WORK. I have even removed all files from my SD card so it is completely empty, and yet it is still not recognized by any of your programs. Your program continues to tell me that I need to purchase an SD card for the unit....WHEN I ALREADY HAVE ONE INSTALLED!

    2. I followed the instructions on your websites PERFECTLY. I SAY AGAIN, PERFECTLY. For you to say that I have not is very insulting.

    3. I am currently attempting to download maps using Express, and it's been locked up for 24 hours on "Estimated time remaining 7 hours 11 minutes". Every time I try to download maps, they lock up. It's not my system, it's your software or your server. It's been a full day now, and it's still locked up.

    4. I build, sell and repair computers for a living and have been doing so since 1985. I'm not a novice.

    5. the instructions provided on your websites are very poorly worded. Whoever wrote them does not understand English. The information written is misguided and not properly worded. It sends readers in wrong directions.

    6. Mapupdater, Mapinstall and Express will not allow me to install the FULL North American maps to my 650 OR MY COMPUTER. All they will allow me to do is to reinstall the North East Region, not the FULL USA maps.

    7. I will try one last time to download the full North American maps, which is currently FROZEN in the download. I cannot remember at this point if I was given the option to download the FULL maps or not. I hope so. If I am given the option to install to my computer, I will attempt to do so as long as the map is the FULL USA version. If this does not work, I want my money back from yesterday's purchase of the Lifetime maps.

You can probably see that I am very angry. I wasted a lot of time and energy on this issue and I keep getting roadblocks. Your company needs to clear up it's procedure for updating units such as the Nuvi 650. It is a very good unit, better than the ones that are on the market today and I don't want to give it up.

Instead of having three pieces of software, Mapinstall, Mapupdater and Garmin Express, you should have only ONE that works 100% of the time.

I hope this download works and I hope it's the FULL North American version. When I started the download, I was not given any option on which maps to download.

    I will keep you posted.
