There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect

Evening all,

Got my brand new Edge 20 today. Created a course from a gpx file and tried to send it to my device. Got the error message "There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect". All software on device and PC is up to date. Have rebooted PC etc etc. This is hugely unimpressive Garmin - it's 2015 not 1990, this stuff should just work, plug and play! Any quick ideas before I package my device up and send it back to the retailer?

If you have a GPX already, you should be able to just copy it into the \Garmin\Newfiles folder on your device and it will be imported as a course.

    @Jason

It does not seems to work, the gpx remains in the newfiles folder.

    Performed steps:
    - connect device (forerunner 920xt)
    - copy gpx to "garmin\newfiles"
    - eject device
    - look under navigation menu for courses -> no course for the uploaded track
    - go through the menu, lock screen, restart -> no course
    - reconnect device -> file still in "garmin\newfiles"

Where did the gpx file come from? You mentioned manually converting the file in your earlier post. Are you putting the original .gpx file into the NewFiles folder or have you modified it at all.

actually yes, is not an "original" gpx file. The file I get is from here http://www.gpsies.com/map.do?fileId=umhyskzlmhjihvhs
I have remove the waypoints, links, gpsies related tags and xml namespace definitions, checked that the gpx could be imported into QMapShack/BaseCamp
I would suppose this could get it quite close to the "original" gpx file.

Since you can import it into BaseCamp you should be able to export it from BaseCamp. Basecamp should format the XML tags so the watch will process it. Export it as a .gpx file from BaseCamp then put into the NewFiles folder on the device and see if it works. You might try the original .gpx file from gpsies.com as well.

It does notwork, the gpx file just stays there in the newfiles folder.

A suggestion that Garmin will probably ignore for marketing reasons: why have Connect web site as the only way to transfer data to these devices, without an offline only option (like phone, Basecamp, etc.)? This would allow us, the users, the ones that have payed for the devices to actually use them, in future cases like these.

Question: is there any timeline to provide a solution to this problem?

I am sorry for the troubles. I did more investigating into this and the reason the .gpx file remains in the NewFiles folder is because of the type of device. The 920XT is a fitness device and they process Courses differently then the Outdoor devices like the fenix3 or Epix. Using an Outdoor device, a .gpx file inside the NewFiles folder will be turned into a Course but a fitness device like the Forerunner 920XT needs a .FIT or .TCX. Until the Garmin Connect Team get the issue with imported .gpx files corrected I can only suggest that you create it manually in the Course creator then send it to the device. There maybe third party sites that offer to export a course file into a .tcx file which you can try but other than introducing a whole other program into the mix to convert the .gpx to .tcx, that is the best solution at this time.

Again, I am sorry for the troubles.

Placing a FIT file into the "newfiles" folder seems to do the trick, the TCX file is ignored.
I was able to download the track in FIT format from gpsies.com, and put it on the device. It does not look 100% ok, it shows 0km on overview, but I can see the whole track on map.
