Base camp does not communicate with the device (nuvi 56). I have tried to sent info from Basecamp to the device but (1.) Basecamp does not detect device or (2) Base camp stops working. ??? Everything work fine for 1 yr....what happened?
Have a look for the BaseCamp data folders. You'll need to copy your data folders from the 4.4 folder to the 4.2 folder. However that may not work as I can't confirm if the data is backward compatible.
Another option as a workaround is to use the current version, where your data works, and export any waypoints etc to your PC. Then simply copy the gpx file from your PC to the GPX folder on your GPS.
I used the legacy version (425.exe) but was unsuccessful. I need a "fix". Come on Garmin.
Sussamb has given you a good plan of action, but may I suggest the following, as you need to be working in the Nuvi 56's Trip Planner sooner rather than later.
1) Unplug the Nuvi 56 from the computer that you use primarily for BaseCamp. Plug the gps into 12v/5v power from a different source or computer to charge the battery. 2) Boot up BaseCamp, export as many Rte 66 trip specific route(s) and waypoints as possible to a gpx file in a folder on the computer. 2a) Shut down BaseCamp if copying files from PC to Nuvi 56 device by USB. 3) Copy that gpx file to an appropriate Garmin folder structure on an SD card using a card reader (or possibly use the gps as card reader if you understand the method). Insert the SD card in the device and power it on.
Check to see how many routes and waypoints have made the transfer by powering up the Nuvi with Trip Planner.
4) Start over with Nuvi 56 Trip Planner to trim the routes down to 29 points per route. Add waypoints for Start, Finish, and in between Stops as needed. Use the computer map displays as a guide.
Thanks for all the tips but I'm still dead in the water. BC still stops recognizing my nuvi 56. I'll wait for a new release of BC. Any idea how long???
No idea ... and equally don't know if the problems with the 2 digit nuvis will be resolved in the next update. You'll need to wait and see if the Basecamp developers chime in.
I've owned my nuvi56 about one year now and I hope Garmin fixes this issue asap. I'm not happy that BC and the nuvi56 stopped working together. I better sent Garmin customer service a message to vent my displeasure. Thxs Joe

Upon further review, I reluctantly updated my Nuvi 56 firmware which had been working fine as a standalone device. No apparent problems, but all existing routing and trips were deleted from the primary gpx file in internal device memory.
After several learning cycles that included my inspection several gpx files here and there in Wordpad, the use of the BaseCamp hidden "Send to Device" menu hierarchy became easier. When sending both Driving profile and Direct (Off Road in Nuvi talk) route profiles to the SD card User folder, things started to make some sense without necessarily hanging up either the device or BaseCamp.
My problem was found yesterday working with a Garmin software developer on the phone. For an unknown reason my "MTP Auto Detect" stopped working correctly. Settings on the nuvi56 where changed to "Mass Storage" and things got back to normal...yippee.
Now I'm going to color all the grey hair that developed during this ordeal. :cool:
