How to delete old device from basecamp?

I'm using basecamp 4.4.6. It shows two devices, my current unit and my previous unit, which I no longer have. Because of various problems I'm having using basecamp, I want to delete my previous unit from basecamp and everywhere else. I'm using Windows 8.1.

I found a previous forum post which said to remove a file named GarminDevice.XML. I can't find any file by that name. I can't find the path given in that forum post. (Yes, I told File Explorer to show all hidden items.)

I uninstalled basecamp and the garmin drivers. I deleted all files and folders with 'garmin' anywhere in the name. I deleted all files and folders with 'basecamp' anywhere in the name. I reinstalled the latest version of basecamp. Basecamp still shows 2 devices.

What do I do now?

Not sure where you're seeing 2 devices? Basecamp will only show your connected devices.

edit > options > device transfer

The drop-down menu within that screen shows my previous and my current Garmin units (complete with Unit IDs), even with no unit connected to the USB. And, naturally, the default is the one that I no longer own.

Ah there. That information is held in Win Registry. Run reg edit and do a search for the unit ID number and you'll find the relevant entry. Deleting it will remove it from the drop down list.

<UserName>/AppData might have a device serial number or two stored in Garmin folders. Windows calculator will convert S/N Hex to Decimal for the curious.

Thanks, that did it. Now I can get back to solving my original problem: why Basecamp locks up every time I try to access my device via USB.

When you say it locks up ....

Initially if you connect a new device BC needs to index the maps on the device. Depending on what maps are loaded this can take a considerable time. Perhaps it's simply that.

When I plug my unit into the USB port, File Explorer opens. I can access all of the device's internal and memory card folders. Garmin Express also works fine. As soon as I start BaseCamp it shows the device as being connected. If I try to send anything to the device BaseCamp sits for a long time and then reports that various .gpx files can't be written.

If I attempt to see, via BaseCamp, what is on my unit, BaseCamp immediately goes to "not responding". The only way out is to close BaseCamp using TaskMaster. The interesting thing is that at the same time as BaseCamp locks up my File Explorer window into the nuvi ALSO goes into "not responding". Some time after closing BaseCamp (several minutes) the File Explorer window closes & reopens and I can again access the nuvi.

So, I can't transfer any data between BaseCamp and my nuvi.

BaseCamp used to work but hasn't for some weeks now. I was trying to remove all traces of Garmin data from my computer so I could perform a completely clean reinstall when I found the issue of remembering the old device. So I knew that there was some data still squirreled away somewhere from previous installs.

That's where I am now. For the record I'm running Windows 8.1 with .Net 4.5.

Sounds like you may have corrupted files on your device. What device do you have?
