Basecamp V4.4.4 - Problems with device custom maps

Hello, I have a Garmin Oregon 650 GPS running V4.30 firmware. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit. I use my own custom maps (kmz) generated by OkMap on both the GPS & within Basecamp. All worked well until Basecamp V4.4.4...

Whilst the kmz maps loaded within Basecamp V4.4.4 work fine, I'm now getting a Basecamp error when it accesses the custom maps on the GPS (via USB) as follows:

1. If the custom map is loaded onto the GPS flash memory:

There was a problem communicating with Oregon 650 (Unit Id: nnnnnnn) (F:).
An error has occurred with the following file(s):
Garmin/CustomMaps/Bunyaville (GDA94 Z56).kmz

2. If the custom map is loaded onto the microSD card within the GPS:

There was a problem communicating with Memory Card (H:).
An error has occurred with the following file(s):
Garmin/CustomMaps/Bunyaville (GDA94 Z56).kmz

Note, there is no problem with the GPS rendering & using the custom map, it still works fine with the same kmz map i.e. it is solely Basecamp V4.4.4

I tested this on a second Windows 7 (32 bit) machine and Basecamp V4.4.4 on this machine generates the same error.

I uninstalled Basecamp V4.4.4 and reinstalled Basecamp V4.4.2 (from a backup) and V4.4.2 does NOT generate the error. It would seem that V4.4.4 has a regression...

Just wondering if anyone else has this problem?

Thanks

Alan
  • I'm not seeing that, works fine with my two GPS handhelds.
  • Also wasn't able to reproduce this error. Have 10 custom maps on my Oregon 650, all work just fine in V4.4.4

Am I able to upload a copy of a map in question (e.g. Bunyaville (GDA94 Z56).kmz) for MARIOMOBIEL to see if reproduces the problem on their Oregon 650? It's about 2.9MB.

    Thanks

  • I suggest you upload it to something like dropbox and pm Mario or myself a link
  • No problem AlanPr, upload the map so we can give it a go.

In the mean time, given that the moderators didn't have any problems, I did some further investigations with my system/configuration.

I tried uninstalling/reinstalling V4.4.4 but it did not fix the problem.

My configuration has the Garmin Basecamp database located on a different partition i.e. in a folder on my D: drive (C: & D: are on same physical HD). This is in lieu of the default location i.e. C:\Users\Alan\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\BaseCamp. This can be done using "Edit","Options", "General" and "Database Option". I relocated the Garmin Database to keep the C: partition size down for windows system backup purposes. I did check the D: folder security permissions & they're OK.

I switched the Garmin Database back to the default location & no more device errors!

I did further tests i.e. the database on a different C: drive folder e.g. C:\Test (which is other than the default location). This worked fine.

So, for some reason, Basecamp V4.4.4 for GPS device synchronisation, doesn't like the database being located on a different partition/drive (compared with V4.4.2).

Could the moderators please try creating a Garmin Database (can be blank) on a different partition to the C: drive & then check if the Oregon 650 has sync errors?

For the time being, I'll defer uploading the kmz file....

    Thanks

Just checking whether moderator MARIOMOBIEL has been able to recreate the device communication problem when the Garmin Database is not located on the default partition/drive i.e. could they please try locating it on different drive?

    Thanks
