Transferring waypoints

When I got my NUVI 1350, I could arrange the Waypoints in Basecamp Folders, and when I sent everything to the Garmin, everything ended up in the Category (Folders) they were in Basecamp. The update to BaseCamp I installed in the middle of May 2014, changed that and in addition to putting Waypoints in Basecamp folder you had to add a Category to each Waypoint for them to appear in the Garmin Category (Folders).

With the recent update, (Installed it today 09/08/14) I can not longer get the Waypoints from Base camp into the Category (Folders) of the Garmin.

Could some one outline the procedure to transfer folder with waypoints and categories to the Garmin and have them appear in the same category (folders) structure as in BaseCamp.

Or is this a programing error like the one in May that took a month to correct. To say the least, I was a bit upset in May when the Garmin technician told me he could not help me and I would have to wait until after my vacation for the software to be fixed. Now we are back in a similar situation.
  • Only 30 I can recall is via points in a trip .... not sure about a max number of categories.

In my case (the models I own) that'd be 50 :)

I found this with a search engine.

How do I add, edit, or delete a waypoint category on my nuvi, LIVE, dezl, Camper/RV, or zumo device?

That doesn't mention a limit but I think there is one.

    ...{snip & emphasis mine}...
When you transfer data from BC to a device what happens (for most devices) is that a temp.gpx file is written. Upon reboot the device reads that file and adds the transferred data.

What I'd do is try the transfer, close BC, copy the temp.gpx file on your unit, and look at it to see if the waypoint categories are in the file. If so BC is working correctly and the issue is with your device. If not BC is the culprit.

So you are thinking that my City categories assigned in BC might be in the temp.gpx ... the implication being that the Nuvi isn't working right. But you did say "adds"... Then there's another post about temp.gpx:

Well your simple example may not work for you but it does when I do it, the category transfers across just fine. It's how I edit my nuvis. I pull all the data across to Basecamp, clear my nuvi, edit the data in BC and then send it back. Categories in BC transfer across.

Do you delete the temp.gpx file created by BC when you send data across once the data has been 'imported', which happens the first time you switch your nuvi on? Just wondering if that may confuse your nuvi and create the problem you describe.

Incidentally I did read your posts clearly, but you added more detail in a later post which I didn't see until I'd posted mine.

First, apologies for implying you didnt read it. But others also misunderstood it too. And I'm frustrated. :)

Now, your process contains an extra step... you asked if I delete the temp.gpx.... in fact I do not make it a general practice. I've only done it a few times, and it was very early in my relationship with nuvi, and to undo something I really flubbed (like creating unwanted Nuvi categories for every list a WP might exist on BC). For the most part, I just "Send to...", unplug and go.... its easy enough to remove a WP or two on the Nuvi itself.

Having said all that, its beginning to become clear what may be happening: Because the WPs are already in the Nuvi, I can edit the WP in BC all I want, but because it is not an "add", the edits do not get picked up when the Nuvi boots.

When I get an opportunity to go out and bring in my Nuvi, I'll try the deletion of temp.gpx as you describe. If that works, then we must presume that the Nuvi has flaws or limitations in the code to overwrite a WP. I'll post the results of that experiment.

I have a handful of WPs out in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, filed in a list called "00 Tips & Tricks"; each WP contains useful notes about the devices and BC. I bet I create a WP called "remove temp.gpx" as a reminder. :)
  • I wouldn't bother .... when I did my test I left temp.gpx there ... and everything worked as I expected. So I've got no idea why it's not working for you
  • In my case (the models I own) that'd be 50 :)

Ah but I can then add hundreds of 'do not alert/shaping' points :p

Perhaps Challenger Deep (deepest known point in the ocean) would be more appropriate :p

Have you ever used that many? :p

And the fastest I've been is 128mph (not in my current vehicle though).

    Update on Category transference BC->Nuvi

I wouldn't bother .... when I did my test I left temp.gpx there ... and everything worked as I expected. So I've got no idea why it's not working for you

OK, here's the update... seems its "doable" but not as simply as one would think.
Scenario: I have a new City category in BC, containing 3 WPs, one of which I've been using as my guinea pig & test subject.... The City category does not exist on Nuvi, but the 3 WPs are in the device under "Places & Coords" category.

Here is step by step what I did:
    • Backup the G: (nuvi internal) & H: (nuvi sdcard) "drives" to my PC
    • cruise down into G:\GPX and delete temp.gpx, left "Current.gpx" alone
    • Launch BC, answer prompts to update to 4.4.4.0
    • relaunch & watch hour glass and "(Not Responding") for a couple minutes
    • Did "Send to..." in BC from the folder named "0 Nuvi" (with 8 city lists beneath) to Nuvi internal.
    • Waited for that complete, clicked on Nuvi internal storage in BC for a quick look... Seems OK
    • Looked in G:\GPX to see fresh temp.gpx arrived.
    • Disconnect Nuvi & wait 10 seconds
    • Power up Nuvi
    • Looked for my "test" waypoint, found it did not create new City category, and on the "i" screen only listed "Places & Coords" as the category.

Time to experiment on a hunch....
    • Deleted test WP from Nuvi
    • Reconnect to PC
    • Did a "Send to..." of the new City category on BC to the Nuvi internal storage.
    • Wait for it to complete, and disconnect from PC
    • Power up Nuvi
    • Went to saved places on nuvi and WADDYA KNOW? New "City" category present! YAY!!!
    • But, it only contains the one "test" WP I deleted from Nuvi and lacks the "Places & Coords" category (I had removed that category from everything in BC)
    • Also, the other 2 WPs that were in that City category are not listed in the new category on Nuvi... they retain the "Places & Coords" category, and only that one.

It appears I was on the right track that only ADDS (not Changes) get transferred.

SO..... I guess I need to figure out how to mass-delete every WP (except please not the three I set as shortcuts?). Then it should see every WP on BC as "new" and load it up with MY categories.

Pretty darn clunky to have to delete WPs on Nuvi in order to update them from BC. (I've already long accepted that I cannot delete WPs from Nuvi via BC. :( )
