Transferring waypoints

When I got my NUVI 1350, I could arrange the Waypoints in Basecamp Folders, and when I sent everything to the Garmin, everything ended up in the Category (Folders) they were in Basecamp. The update to BaseCamp I installed in the middle of May 2014, changed that and in addition to putting Waypoints in Basecamp folder you had to add a Category to each Waypoint for them to appear in the Garmin Category (Folders).

With the recent update, (Installed it today 09/08/14) I can not longer get the Waypoints from Base camp into the Category (Folders) of the Garmin.

Could some one outline the procedure to transfer folder with waypoints and categories to the Garmin and have them appear in the same category (folders) structure as in BaseCamp.

Or is this a programing error like the one in May that took a month to correct. To say the least, I was a bit upset in May when the Garmin technician told me he could not help me and I would have to wait until after my vacation for the software to be fixed. Now we are back in a similar situation.

I will look into this issue for you. I apologize for the trouble this is causing.

Actually, I was hoping for some clarification. Are you saying that you use the waypoint categories interface and add categories, and when you transfer the waypoints they do not show up?

I am not at the moment actually able to recreate your issue. Would you be willing to send me an export of your waypoints? You can send to [email protected] We will not share your information and it will only be obtained for purposes of resolving your issue.

Let me know if this works for you.

    Thanks!

    I actually would like both.

You can export the ones from BaseCamp using the normal method of doing so in the file menu.

On the device, there is usually a Garmin folder, and under that a GPX folder. Send me the contents of that GPX folder.

Please rename the files, if you would, so it is very clear where they came from. And in your e-mail, if you would not mind, very clear steps. Like 1. Did this. 2. Did that. That helps us greatly to see exactly how you are using our software and will allow me to replicate your exact steps.

Let me know if you have questions. And thank you for your patience. We do take these questions and concerns seriously.

Oh, do not rename the files on the device. Copy them off the device and rename them. Changing the names of the files actually on the device will have unexpected results.

I found this thread searching for the problem KNUTTLE presented. It used to be so easy to place basecamp waypoints in subdirectories, then have those subdirectories appear on the NUVI 3790 in categories. NOW even though I have my basecamp waypoints in subdirectories, I also have to take the extra step to assign those waypoints to a categories (select a group of waypoints>open>categories>add category.

I'm also finding that a waypoint on my NUVI cannot be overwritten with new content from basecamp.

    Nuvi 3790 software version 5.00, firmware 2.60 PMIC 824 TSC 1.16; basecamp 4.4.2
  • I liked it that way too but more wanted a return to the way Mapsource did it.

Have exactly this problem on Nuvi 2595 LMT....
    tagging for future updates.

    ETA:
My Nuvi has waypoints saved as categories (named for cities) which is how I had Lists created in Basecamp quite a long time ago. Somewhere along the line, I noticed that when I'd add a WP in BC under a city's List, the WP would not end up in the city's Category on the Nuvi. Only way to find a WP on Nuvi now is to search within "All Saved Places".

I also noticed in BC that many WP have a system-generated "Map Points & Coordinates" category, which corresponds to a system-generated "Map Points & Coordinates" on the Nuvi.

Now I can of course edit each WP on the Nuvi and set it to the proper city category, but what a pain. So, in BC, one at a time, I selected every WP within each city List, did Open->Categories and typed in a Category that exactly matched the name of the List I was within. Then I transferred to the Nuvi and they still do not appear in the city Category, but many are within the system-generated "Map Points & Coordinates" on the Nuvi.

Next, I tried removing the system-generated "Map Points & Coordinates" from WPs within BC and transferring them to Nuvi (thinking "maybe it can only handle one?")... but alas, no joy. In fact these WPs retained the system-generated "Map Points & Coordinates" within the Nuvi.

Hope this helps. It's making me crazy.

You should be able to edit waypoints in mass and add categories. You should not have to do these one at a time. So if you have 20 waypoints that need to be in your cities category, select them all, then open them, and you can add that category.

As for the system generated one, I am not sure there is anything we will be able to do about that one specifically but I will check. The Nuvi you have uses the same categories system that BaseCamp uses. It may be a setting on the Nuvi not to have this category. BaseCamp simply just reads it from the file off the device.

I will check on this though.

Does this help you edit your categories faster?

I know about selecting them all, and adding category by opening them.... In fact that is what I did.
The problem is that the categories do not transfer to the Nuvi: On the Nuvi, they retain only the one system-generated category.

To be clear, I don't mind the system generated category (it has its uses)... I only included that in order to reduce confusion in my description of which categories are, and are not, transferring. Sorry if I actually created MORE confusion.
