Imported course from Basecamp = no elevation data!

Hi,

How does it come that I cannot see the elevation profile of a course created with Basecamp? I would like to monitor that profile for the portion in front of me.

Thought in Basecamp, elevation data are present!

Who is able to help me?

Many thanks.

all....no matter which map I select: Garmin Cycle EU 2014.10 or OpenCycleMap

Thats correct, the DEM is not in the Garmin Cycle EU 2014.10, it's a separate file in your Edge, its called the gmapdem.img file and if you work with basecamp only one map at the time can be used. Unfortunately the separate DEM map is never shown in BaseCamp, thus not selectable to gen elevation information from it and is only usable in the Edge where maps can be overlaid and DEM information should be read by the Edge it it's showing you a course without previously added elevation.

To repeat an earlier question: is the gmapdem.img map still on the SD card of your Edge 1000?

Please use the free program JaVaWa Device Manager to look into your Edge (program is in windows and mac versions available).

Alrights, i just send an route and a track to the Edge Touring, which contains the same maps as an Edge 1000, and the Edge Touring does not show elevation profiles. Both route and tracks doe not have any elevation information in te GPX file.

So it seems to be an Edge problem that it does not show elevation profile for courses without elevation in it. Only if added elevation previously by using a Topo map or a website it is shown, as if the gmapdem.img map does not contain any elevation data or is not in the Edge available..

No bug in BaseCamp, but bug in Edge firmware.

    Hi Pieter,

As I wrote in post 9 before, I didn't delete any maps on my Edge. So, gmapdem.img is still there.

How can you explain that on the Basecamp Mac version, I can see the profile of a route when using OpenFietsMap?

In my opinion, there are 2 bugs, one in the Edge, one in Basecamp Mac + one missing function in Basecamp Windows!

    1. Edge 1000: can't shows elevation profile with particular elevation data format: ex. 50,2345678 m doesn't work. 50,2 m is working.
    2. Basecamp Mac: elevation data of some specific maps like OpenCycleMap are displayable. Unfortunately, this software doesn't export those data in the .gpx file!
    3. Basecamp Windows: elevation data are not shown when using OpenCycleMap.

I you give me an email address, I can send you a copy of my screen with the elevation data shown in Basecamp!

    Hi Pieter,
    Call me Marco ;)

As I wrote in post 9 before, I didn't delete any maps on my Edge. So, gmapdem.img is still there.
    Sorry, overlooked that.

    ex. 50,2345678 m doesn't work. 50,2 m is working.
Its a bit silly to ask for so much decimals, with a GPS device which has a maximum accuracy of 2 to 3 meters horizontal and vertical twice as much, the barometer corrects a part of it, but not with so much decimals ;) I agree that the Edge should then extract the needed data and not ignore the elevation. You are probably dutch also, you write 50,2345678m and not 50.2345678m :) (decimal/comma)

I assume that OpenCycleMap and OpenFietsMap are the same and coming from here: http://www.openfietsmap.nl (great map :) )

A default download of OpenFietsMap does not contain any elevation information (OSM does not contain them), however, you can add the SRTM lines (OFM hiking layer) to the OFM map and that will give you a raw elevation profile (DEM is more fine graded). My loaded Europe OFM map has no hiking layer and I see no elevation.

Did you copied the OFM map from OSX to windows or downloaded a new version of OFM map?
In my BaseCamp Mac I see a graph on the OFM map, but it's course over ground (with tracks, not with routes).

A workaround for the elevation is after using BaseCamp and OpenFietsMap to make a route, export the selected route(s) and/or track(s) to a GPX file on your computer and open it with JaVaWa RTWtool to convert it to a course (2 steps) and let RTWtool add the elevation information. First convert them to tracks and add elevation, then recycle (reuse) and send the tracks as Device(course) to the Edge.

Advantage is that it use the same information as ridewithgps or OFM SRTM and you can send more than one route/track to the Edge.
  • I get elevation data for routes created on Windows Basecamp. This is using a version of OpenStreetMap that I build myself to include contours.

Note that not all versions of OpenFietsMap include contours - the 'Lite' versions do not, and on my system, routes using such a map show no elevation data.

I completely agree. I don't see the use of so many decimals but data of this kind do exist. I am a belgian french speaking guy.

    Yes indeed. Great maps!

I downloaded the map from the dutch site you are referring to and I can see the elevation graph with the route (itinéraire in french). With tracks (tracés), I don't get any elevation data.

you copied the OFM map from OSX to windows or downloaded a new version of OFM map?

    Downloaded a new one.

my BaseCamp Mac I see a graph on the OFM map, but it's course over ground (with tracks, not with routes).

Course over ground? What do you mean? I have 3 options on my french version of Basecamp: Waypoint, itinéraire (routes) and tracé (tracks)

workaround for the elevation is after using BaseCamp and OpenFietsMap to make a route, export the selected route(s) and/or track(s) to a GPX file on your computer and open it with JaVaWa RTWtool to convert it to a course (2 steps) and let RTWtool add the elevation information. My workaround is to import the gpx file into ridewithgps and export it again to my Edge.....working fine. THKS!

Me too. The problem is that I cannot import the route to my Edge 1000 with these elevation data. The Edge is displaying a flat elevation line for your planned ride!
