Imported course from Basecamp = no elevation data!

Hi,

How does it come that I cannot see the elevation profile of a course created with Basecamp? I would like to monitor that profile for the portion in front of me.

Thought in Basecamp, elevation data are present!

Who is able to help me?

Many thanks.

Only way I've got that to work is to use http://ridewithgps.com to create the course, then you can see upcoming elevation changes. Disappointing you don't get this when using the 'approved' method of making courses using Garmin's software and websites.

    I completely agree. Disappointing.

Email sent to Garmin support this morning. I am curious.

After some investigation, it seems there is an incompatibility problem with imported elevation values: integer or decimal??

Using http://bikeroutetoaster.com also working, allowing elevation profile to be displayed.

Note to the moderator: this is not a "Basecamp" problem but an Edge 1000 issue. Reason why I initially posted on the Edge 1000 section.
  • I've moved this from the Edge 1000 forum to Basecamp as one of the Basecamp developers may be able to help.

    Thank you very much indeed.

Whether or not elevation data is present depends on the map you are using in Basecamp. What map are you using?

I am using either the pre-installed Garmin bike map from my Edge 1000 or the OpenCycleMap itself for Benelux and Germany.

In Basecamp, the elevation data are available. It is perfectly possible to display the elevation profile of a track or course just created.

According to what I understood so far, it seems that the Edge Touring and Edge 1000 are unable to deal with elevation data that are no integer values. These values should be rounded. Unfortunately, elevation data recorded from most planning tools are written in decimal format...I suppose Basecamp does so as well?

So far, I have found 2 planning tools allowing .gpx upload that are perfectly compatible with the Edge1000: ridewithgps.com and bikeroutetoaster.com.
With these 2 software planners, the elevation profile is displayed on the Edge prior starting the ride so that I can monitor what kind of ascent I may expect.

This option should be available whith Basecamp, certainly when using the pre-installed Garmin map!

Most people create routes in BaseCamp, and with routes the elevation is never added to the route. In de Edge it will show up as a course.

If you make a track in BaseCamp using the Edge 1000 OSM map, then also no elevation is added to that track, it's impossible, because the OSM map of the Edge does not contain data. But, If you switch to the Edge DEM map in BaseCamp then you can ask BaseCamp (right mouse button on the track, does not work with routes), to add the elevation to the track. track will show up in Edge also as a course.

A route of a track shown on a map which contains elevation data will give elevation profile graphs on both, but using it from the map and not auto inserting them to the rouet or track..

But the most surprising of the question is for me is: Why is elevation profile not shown in the Edge 1000, while there is a special map with elevation inside the Edge 1000 and the elevation profile should be read from this map if it's not available in the course itself. Did you disable the Garmin DEM map inside the Edge 1000 or deleted it?
Are you outside the the map possible in a country which is not covered by the DEM map?

    Hi Pieter,

Thank you for your answer. To respond to your questions:

No, didn't delete any Garmin pre-installed maps.
All maps on the Edge 1000 are enable.
I am living in Belgium, so, this area is covered.
Additional OFM_DBNL Openfietsmap has been installed into Basecamp.

If I create a course with OFM_DBNL, I can display the profile in Basecamp (right click, show the graph), so I may conclude that the elevation data are available somehow. If I export that course, there are no elevation data included in the .gpx file, which is NOT normal.

If I create the same course with the Garmin Europe cyclemap, a "right click - show the graph" displays the different headings of the course, no elevation data are available, which is NOT normal as well.

What I do actually to circumnavigate this problem is to plan my trip by means of www.fietsnet.be or other "Knooppunten" planners, export the route, import the .gpx file into ridewithgps.com, and export again with elevation data perfectly available on my Edge.....

Thank you Garmin! I reported this issue to garmin and I am still waiting for their explanation.

I believe the Touring and 1000 just use the DEM map for route planning. The elevation data has to be in the track.
If you plan (create) a route with the device, you may get the elevation data. But the device won't add it to a loaded course.

There is no routing information in the DEM map, only DEM. I have no personal experience with the Edge 1000, but in all other Garmin devices (including the Edge Touring), the DEM map is used to show elevation profiles when the elevation profile from a route or track is shown.

If elevation is not in the track/route the DEM map will be used. It will not enrich the track/route/course with elevation! Only activities have the barometric elevation.

Probably if the elevation row in a route/track is zeroized by purpose, then there is probably no elevation profile to show in the Edge.
