Imported course from Basecamp = no elevation data!

Hi,

How does it come that I cannot see the elevation profile of a course created with Basecamp? I would like to monitor that profile for the portion in front of me.

Thought in Basecamp, elevation data are present!

Who is able to help me?

Many thanks.

I believe the Touring and 1000 just use the DEM map for route planning. The elevation data has to be in the track.
If you plan (create) a route with the device, you may get the elevation data. But the device won't add it to a loaded course.

What do you mean exactly by planning a route with the device? Do you mean planning on a 3" display? This is not what I would like to do. I use to create the route in Basecamp based on the Garmin Cycle map EU 2014.10 pre-installed on my Edge 1000. If I upload the route straight from BC to the Edge, there is NO elevation data uploaded. That is just what we are talking about.

Garmin put a software at our disposal, Basecamp and I expect at least basic functionality's for a device equipped with an altimeter. I need the elevation profile before the ride in order to evaluate what is coming in front of me. Basecamp exports the data file without any elevation data included. IMHO, it's a real problem!

We shouldn't have to use third party software to get this solved!
  • Well I'd wait to see what the Basecamp developers say ... being August and the holiday season responses could be a tad slow.

I am curious... when you plan the route, do you see elevation data in the route on the graph tab? Does this get filled out when you plan the route in BaseCamp?

Yes indeed with the exception that I have no graph tab.... I use a Mac version 4.2.4 under OS X 10.6.8
As I said in a previous post, I get no elevation data with the original pre-installed Cycle map.
At the contrary, if I plan a route using OpenCycleMap Benelux + Germany, right clicking on the route gives me a menu with the option "display the graph". In that particular case, the elevation profile is displayed in Basecamp but not included in the .gpx file when the route is exported.

Actually, you are using a Mac? This is the Windows forums. You might want to post this issue in the Mac forums because the Mac developers watch that forum and will be better suited to help you. Are you also seeing this issue on Windows? If that is the case, I will open a case for this.

The 1000 and Touring have options to allow the device to generate routes based on minimizing elevation. That's a sort of route planning. The Garmins use the DEM file to be able to do that.

If I upload the route straight from BC to the Edge, there is NO elevation data uploaded. That is just what we are talking about.

Is there elevation data in the file?

I get an elevation profile on the 800 with tcx and gpx files created by ridewithgps.
  • If elevation is not in the track/route the DEM map will be used. It will not enrich the track/route/course with elevation!

I believe the elevation profile displays the elevation in the track/route. It doesn't lookup the elevation from the DEM database. The elevation has to be in the file.

The DEM database is used when generating routes. That's how the 1000 and the Touring can generate routes to minimize elevation.

Probably if the elevation row in a route/track is zeroized by purpose, then there is probably no elevation profile to show in the Edge.

No zeroing of data is going on.

I posted my original message on the Edge 1000 forum but Basecamp was mentionned in the title, so that the moderator displaced the messsage towards this forum ignoring that I was working on a Mac.

Frankly, I don't think that Basecamp Win version will behave in another way as far as the elevation profile is concerned.
But I have also a PC with which I can try. I will report the outcome of the test.

    Thanks for your help.

There are no elevation data in the file.
As i wrote, ridewithgps is OK with the Edge 1000 and I use it all the time.

I've just tested the Windows version BC 4.3.5 + Win7
    It's getting even worst!
There, I've no elevation data at all....no matter which map I select: Garmin Cycle EU 2014.10 or OpenCycleMap.
If I create a route, the Graph Tab indicates "current map doesn't contain any elevation data"
If I export the route in .gpx format, no elevation data is written on it.

Just to remind you, with Basecamp Mac version:

I can get the elevation profile in Basecamp when selecting an OpenCycleMap (right click and show the graph) but not if the pre-installed Garmin Cycle Map is selected, in that case, the option "show the graph" is not available.

But I never get elevation data in the gpx file exported.....
