Basecamp won't load on Windows 7

I downloaded Basecamp and launched it from the set up wizard. Now it will not launch from the Start panel on Windows (7 Pro). I have to reinstall and start from the Wizard every tiime. The error message I get is "Basecamp needs read & write access to a system provided temporary directory. The path returned by Windows is C:\users\Mike\Appdata\local\Temp"

Anyone know what I can do?

Great that you found a fix, but wouldn't it be easier/safer to enable full access on that one directory than disabling UAC?

Yes, I'm still not sure which folder permissions are causing the problems. I've tried turning off the write protect manually from folder properties, but it doesn't want to stick...

    Try this:

    • Enable UAC and make sure BC does not start, as before.
    • In Win Explorer select the Temp folder
    • Right click Properties
    • Uncheck (blank out) the Read Only checkbox at the bottom
    • Accept all dialogs
    • Restart BC... chances are it will now start without error.

I've tried that, but the uncheck read only box won't stay unchecked.
I get the 'Applying changes' box which appears to run through the folders, but checking properties afterwards show no change.

If you mean that after Applying the changes the Read Only checkbox if filled with a color (mine looks blue) then that's normal, it will not look unchecked but the folder will not be Read Only.

    Yep.
Go to properties for Temp folder (C:\Users\User\AppData\Local ), change the read only check box from filled to empty, click apply.
    Confirm attribute changes, Pick OK.
Go back to the properties, and the read only box is still filled, suggesting the folder is still read only, and hasn't actually changed.

Uh, and BC still refuses to launch....

Hmm, it's something else then. With UAC enabled and BC refusing to start... what happens if you right click the BaseCamp desktop icon and select "Run as administrator"?

If that works then you might want to modify the icon to permanently run as administrator (until you figure out what the real problem is).
  • I started having the same problem. Last week Basecamp ran fine, this week I get the error message that Basecamp needs read and write to the temporary directory as in the comments above. I've tried all the suggestions and the only way I can get it to work is Run as Administrator. I am running Windows 7 and Microsoft did an update since the last time I successfully ran basecamp. Wonder if the update caused the problem? I tried to restore to a point last week, and the restore would not work. Any suggestions?
