Basecamp won't load on Windows 7

I downloaded Basecamp and launched it from the set up wizard. Now it will not launch from the Start panel on Windows (7 Pro). I have to reinstall and start from the Wizard every tiime. The error message I get is "Basecamp needs read & write access to a system provided temporary directory. The path returned by Windows is C:\users\Mike\Appdata\local\Temp"

Anyone know what I can do?
  • Not sure what you've done but I'd go to http://www.garmin.com/en-GB/shop/downloads/basecamp and run it directly from the website. That should install it correctly onto your PC.

Just installed basecamp ver 4.2.5 on a windows 7 machine. Won't run at all. Used Garmin Express to update my nuvi 550 and it installed basecamp to the machine. Garmin software had never been installed on this machine before. Any thoughts?
  • Why 4.2.5 ... latest is 4.4.2 ... in any case both run on my Win7 machines. Are you getting any error messages?

4.2.5 was working on XP machine so thought I would stay with what worked for me. Tried to down load the 4.4.2 ver on the win 7 machine and the down load failed.
As for 4.2.5 there was no error msg at all. So I have the 2015.20 maps for my nuvi 550 on the win 7 machine and can't use it. Did the 2015.2 map update to the XP machine and as expected that over wrote basecamp with the vista and above ver 4.4.2 Didn't run of course. It was interesting that Garmin Express detected the XP OS.
Got the XP machine up and running basecamp 4.2.2 and maps 2015.20. Lost all data but got most back from the nuvi. Fortunately Mapsource was not screwed up and is happy with 2015.20 and all my data is there.

Some day maybe I'll get everything working on the win 7 machine if I can find my old 2008 topo disc that has mapsource on it. What ever happened to the KISS principle??????????

No need. Download MapSource 6.16.3 from here. I use it on my Win7 SP1 x64 box (and BC 4.4.2 every now and then).

I think map updates install BC now in case the user also elects to install maps to their PC. Evidently users are too stupid to do that themselves.

Ok, finally got a version of BC 4.4.2 to down load and found the whole problem as others have mentioned ms.net 4.5 wasn't on the win 7 machine. Now all that is left to do is get my maps over from the XP machine and get mapsource loaded.
after that it will start all over again when the new nuvi I ordered along with the latest topo 100k gets here. I really really really hate moving to new OS such a pain. Tnx for all the help and a forum with good info once you wade through all the threads.

Just wondering if you ever found a solution to this problem?

I'm trying to install Base Camp for the first time and downloaded 4.4.2 from the Garmin website, and it seemed to install OK, but after closing it down and then restarting I get the message "Basecamp needs read & write access to a system provided temporary directory. The path returned by Windows is C:\users\Mike\Appdata\local\Temp\."
I have tried uninstalling and deleting the Base Camp directory, and then downloading and re-installing again, but same thing happens. Interestingly, after uninstalling and re-installing, Base Camp kept the Route I had set up, so I can at least use the program but have to install it each time I want to use it.
I have a Nuvi 255W which connects and had no problem copying the installed map over to Base Camp.
Hoping someone has the fix for this!

Have you run the installer as an administrator? You can right click on the installer and choose that option and it may give you better results.
