Is it possible to add custom Symbol Icons ? (Via Basecamp)

When you edit a Waypoint, Poi etc, is it possible to add a (personal) custom symbol or are you stuck with the standard ones (I guess so)

I know you can do it via Poi Loader but that is 1 bmp (22x22) for all Poi's, I just want to add some of my own to some poi's

Thanks

I'm running Basecamp 4.3.4 and want to add Custom waypoint symbols to my BC map. The BC HELP file provides some strange and confusing instructions.
    ------
    "Editing Waypoints
You can change the characteristics of a waypoint, including the name, the position, and the symbol. You can also change the characteristics of multiple waypoints at the same time.

Click a waypoint, or hold § while clicking to select multiple waypoints.
Press §+I on your keyboard. The waypoint properties dialog box appears.
Change the name, the symbol, and the comment as needed.
Click Advanced to change the following fields:
    Position—edit the position coordinates.
Proximity—enter a proximity alert distance. (This option does not work with all Garmin devices. See your GPS device owner's manual.) A circle appears showing this distance on the map.
    Elevation—enter the elevation.
Display—select the information you want to display on the map.
Files and Links—link media to the waypoint."
    ======

I have no idea what key is § I also do not find "Advanced" as a drop down option or the Waypoint property dialog box.

    §

This is the Ctrl key on your keyboard. Press and hold is while selecting Waypoints by clicking them using the mouse.

    Thanks.
After clicking on a waypoint it the properties window opens.
If I then do Ctrl + I and I get a screen message about Geotaging. How do I get to add a new jpg file for a custom POI symbol?

I do not have an "Advanced" item to click. Does anyone at Garmin review their "Help" files to see if they reflect the program the HELP file is suppose to work with?
  • The problem is that you are looking at the manual for the Mac version of BaseCamp (The § symbol is actually the Apple symbol); the Windows version works a bit different. The Windows version doesn't have a "Advanced" tab, and Ctrl + I is the command for importing files (presumably you selected a jpg file; hence the geotagging question).
This is not the way to add custom waypoint symbols. First of all you can't use jpg files for custom symbols; only bmp files. Second you can't add custom symbol files through the properties window of a waypoint.
See the websites BABJ615 and IAMMIKEY are referring to for the correct way to implement custom waypoint symbols.

Ofcourse the fact that BaseCamp is showing the Mac-version of the manual is a huge bug...

    Thanks.
I'm trying to do 2 things at once.
Restore files & folders from a crashed HD
    and
Learn how to add custom POI symbols into BC and my nuvi.

    Guess i can't do that multi-tasking :-(

Reviewed BABJ615 and IAMMIKEY websites again and now I see what they are suggesting. Thanks to you for sending me back to these 2 good sources and thanks to BABJ615 and IAMMIKEY for their postings.

BaseCamp and My Zumo 660 show the Custom icons. The Zumo 660 will show my Custom Waypoints symbols...beginning at the zoomed in level of200 ft only. I have many, for example Love's, Pilot, TA, Flying J, Travel Plaza and others....plus all the National parks and favorite places to eat (mom and pop)..
the custom waypoint symbol was created in Paint, 24x24 pixels, 256 color (a must) with Bitmap image. Never never moved the custom waypoints symbols from the MY Garmin Folder to another folder... ask me how I know...;) you lose them and they become blue dots.

Naming is important....must have same name as waypoint except the Icon must have the .bmp while the waypoint is .gpx

I use POI loader to load this data into my EXTRAS on Zumo 660 ... (the store house of all my repeated used waypoints, many thousand waypoints (14 mp)

    Hope this helps.
  • POI Loader turns waypoints into POI's; they're not the same... Almost every device supports POI's with custom POI symbols.
On a device that supports custom waypoint symbols you can create new waypoints and assign custom symbols on the device itself; something that is not possible on the zumo.
