Basecamp does not see my Dakota 20

Hi,
All of a sudden Basecamp (v4.2.1) will no longer see my Dakota 20. I am running Windows 8.1. The Windows Explorer sees the device (both the Garmin and the microSD card in it, so it doesn't seem to be a Windows problem), but Basecamp does not connect. The device does not show in the library list of Basecamp. Trying to send or receive data to or from the device with Basecamp results in an error "No devices attached/connected to Basecamp". Still, the device is accessible through the operating system.

If I detach the device for a second the device shows up in the library list, followed by a dialog box showing an error:

Next there is a dialog box for each of the files mentioned in the first dialog box:

I did an uninstall/reinstall of Basecamp, but the problem still remains. Any suggestions on what to do or what causes the problem?

Possibly a corruped gpx file, try moving them all off the Dakota then see if Basecamp will recognise it. If it doesn't then try a master reset.

Incidentally latest Basecamp is 4.2.5 ... perhaps try updating if the above doesn't work

I installed Basecamp 4.2.1 on another Windows computer. The Dakota was recognized immediately by Basecamp, so it is very unlikely that the problem is in a corrupted gpx file. Nevertheless, I deleted them all from my Dakota and tried again on my primary computer. No luck. Since the Dakota connected to BC on the other machine I don't think a factory reset of the device will have any effect.

BTW, I updated the Garmin Communicator plugin to v4.1.0. The plugin sees the Dakota if it is connected through USB. So I think the problem is actually a BC problem. Do you have any other suggestions?

Well given what you now say try uninstalling and then reinstalling Basecamp.

Uninstalled BC v4.2.1 and installed v4.2.5.
Still no luck.

Were you running the same OS on your other PC?

On my main computer I am running Windows 8.1, the other computer runs Windows 7.

Did a Windows system restore (date March 25th). No luck either.

Is it possible that the Garmin USB driver is corrupt? If so, how can I correct it?

I installed good ol' Mapsource v6.16.3 on my computer, just to be sure. And yes indeed, Mapsource transferred tracks and waypoints to my Dakota 20. So it is definitely a Basecamp problem that can't be solved by a simple uninstall/reinstall :(

FYI BC leaves lots of folders/files behind (as does most software) after it is uninstalled. It could be that cleaning out your system (entirely) of anything BC related and re-installing may do the trick. Or it could be some .NET issue (Win8.x recently got a number of Microsoft updates I think).

MapSource being a native app doesn't use .NET.

PS: Many "BaseCamp" folders are, by default, hidden from normal users. When searching you HD(s) you must include system/hidden folders (tick the option for that in Windows).

I uninstalled all Garmin software from my computer. Next I deleted all remaining Garmin folders on my harddrive and manually deleted all remaining Garmin registry keys. Then I reinstalled Basecamp, but the problem remains. The Microsoft .Net Framework Repair Tool didn't solve the problem, either.
