Basecamp does not see my Dakota 20

Hi,
All of a sudden Basecamp (v4.2.1) will no longer see my Dakota 20. I am running Windows 8.1. The Windows Explorer sees the device (both the Garmin and the microSD card in it, so it doesn't seem to be a Windows problem), but Basecamp does not connect. The device does not show in the library list of Basecamp. Trying to send or receive data to or from the device with Basecamp results in an error "No devices attached/connected to Basecamp". Still, the device is accessible through the operating system.

If I detach the device for a second the device shows up in the library list, followed by a dialog box showing an error:

Next there is a dialog box for each of the files mentioned in the first dialog box:

I did an uninstall/reinstall of Basecamp, but the problem still remains. Any suggestions on what to do or what causes the problem?

I have used both USB2 and USB3 ports. It makes no difference.

What puzzles me is that when I disconnect the Dakota from my computer while running Basecamp the program pops up with error messages in relation to each gpx files that is on the Dakota (see screenshots in my first post). So in some way, Basecamp did have access to the device. It looks as if BC is not able to complete reading the files on the device.
Also, in Windows Explorer, accessing the folders on the Garmin device and microSD card in it is sluggish when Basecamp is running. If BC is not running, access speed to the device is normal. I guess that BC is trapped in a loop or something like that when initializing its connection to the device.
  • Certainly seems like a PC rather than Basecamp or device issue, given everything else you've stated.

I removed all Windows updates that were installed since March 14th. I am sure that before that date the Dakota connected correctly.
Unfortunately, these actions had no result. I have not installed other programs or updates of programs recently that may have 'corrupted' my computer. Right now I can't think of any other option to solve the problem.
Any suggestion is very, very welcome ...

Were you able to find a resolution to this issue? A few days ago I upgraded Basecamp to 4.3.5 and my Oregon 450 to the latest firmware. Since that time, Basecamp no longer sees my Oregon 450, even though the Garmin and SD card drives show up in Explorer (i.e. Windows sees the Oregon 450), and I can download and upload tracks from/to the Oregon 450 using MapSource. I have attempted to reinstall everything (i.e. software, drivers, GPX files on Oregon 450, etc.) yet nothing has fixed the issue. I am running Basecamp in Windows 8.1 and no Windows updates have been applied in several weeks. The only updates I did were to Basecamp and my Oregon 450.

I have gone through all the steps and suggestions but nothing has resolved it. I guess the next step is to call Product Support but if they only have the same steps I have just followed, then that won't be of much use. I hope JOSROIJAKKERS sees this update and responds (with positive news).

    Thanks for the link though.

    Hello Fetus,

Here is an off-the-wall solution I had to find.

A couple years ago I did an up grade to Basecamp and was not paying close attention to the screens popping up.
I have 2 hard drives on my PC and for some reason the update was installed on my backup drive E:
After that Basecamp ran really slow and could not find my GPS devices.
Eventually I found the problem and deleted the copy on E: and upgraded the copy on C: and everything went back to normal.

My point is....look around your hard drive and see if there are 2 instances of Basecamp. That might be your problem.

    Hi Don,

Thank you for the suggestion! I will look for that. I know that I have all of my map products set up and stored on a microSD card (D: drive) but as far as I know Basecamp itself is installed on my C: drive, but something might have changed. Thanks!

Update: I had a look and everything is installed correctly to the C: drive. I do have maps on my D: drive (microSD card) but that should not matter. All program files are on C: in the correct folders.

After doing more troubleshooting steps, I found that when I put the device in Spanner Mode and I connect it and I chose NOT to go into Mass Storage, Basecamp sees the device but says that it cannot download waypoints and routes and that Basecamp might need to be upgraded but I am now running 4.4.1. I also have the latest firmware update for the Oregon 450. When I put it in Mass Storage mode, it stops seeing the device.
