Don't want the Garmin software to install to C:

Hi All,

I've looked for a solution but can't seem to find it anywhere. I have no space left on my SSD drive C:, which is purely for my Windows 7 and Office applications. I have lots of disk capacity on my HHD drive D: where I install ALL other non essential software programs.
Why isn't there a choice of drive when installing Garmin Basecamp, webupdater and many other Garmin programs??????????????
Garmin basecamp, webupdater and several other Garming programs keep continue to install on what little space I have left on my C: drive.
Is there nay way to install the Garmin programs on my D: drive????

I have THREE Garmin GPS devices, a Zumo 500, a Zumo 660 and a Oregon 600t. I can't create routes on my desktop without the software. What a frustrating problem, just because they left out the choice of drive install.

No offence to garmin but having a background in programming its not a hard or long task to change a installer and add the option. Any good programer would be able to have it done faster than most of us can respond to this topic. I contribute the issues im having with mapping detail to having the main program on c and all my map files on another drive...
  • I'm not sure why having your maps on a different drive are causing you 'mapping detail' issues. Basecamp is designed to read maps from drives other than C, I have many maps so installed and have no problem with 'mapping detail'. Perhaps you could explain your particular issue?

Any progress on the C Drive storeage location?

The restriction of having to install on C Drive has been discussed in a few threads here. Now that my 500GB SSD C drive is filling up with maps and BirdsEye I'm reviving this thread to see if there's been any update. As I prepare and work on many Garmin GPS units my C drive gets filled with duplicate files too - for example there's 122 of each of the BirdsEye samples: Zell Am See, Demo, Grand Canyon etc etc.

Is it possible to at least store the BirdsEye files somewhere else other than C Drive? There's about 2,400 files totalling 75GB at present.

I also have a 500GB SSD drive D so it would be handy and fast to be able to put them there. I use JaVaWa GMTK (wonderful programme, have happily donated) to back up the maps to an external hard drive and occasionally do a BaseCamp backup to there as well.

Maps are easy to move to another drive. You simply move them and create a shortcut at the original location. to the new one. This is discussed in other threads. Not sure about Birdseye, but I'm sure that can be done as well.
  • And indeed JaVaWas GMTK will move maps for you.
  • GMTK doesn't move BirdsEye files though, but since BaseCamp stores these files in its library you could copy the current library to your D drive (using BaseCamp: create a new library and BC will ask whether you want to copy the data from the current one), and delete the old library on the C drive.

Thank you very much to the last 2 replies, that will work well. I've never seen the Move button before! Right there all the time! So have ordered another 500G SSD drive for the maps and BirdsEye.

    I need it too !

More and more people will use SSDs, and having the choice for installing is right now a must have feature.
Even if Garmin has separate teams for installer and for BaseCamp, at least the installer team should have it from start.
Simply give the choice to alter or not your default install dir.

  • Basecamp doesn't take up much space, it's the maps and Birdseye that does, and as posted above you can move those.
