Don't want the Garmin software to install to C:

Hi All,

I've looked for a solution but can't seem to find it anywhere. I have no space left on my SSD drive C:, which is purely for my Windows 7 and Office applications. I have lots of disk capacity on my HHD drive D: where I install ALL other non essential software programs.
Why isn't there a choice of drive when installing Garmin Basecamp, webupdater and many other Garmin programs??????????????
Garmin basecamp, webupdater and several other Garming programs keep continue to install on what little space I have left on my C: drive.
Is there nay way to install the Garmin programs on my D: drive????

I have THREE Garmin GPS devices, a Zumo 500, a Zumo 660 and a Oregon 600t. I can't create routes on my desktop without the software. What a frustrating problem, just because they left out the choice of drive install.

    Sadly, the desktop apps group does not create the installers. They are researching the impact of this but I do not have a time table for this to be added.

    It is a known problem to MANY USERS that have a SSD C: drive. They have to work around the problem by deinstalling other programs just to make space and then have to stop the maps from installing on C: also.
    THis is not professional, almost any installer has this option to change the drive. I expect MORE from Garmin, this is not a difficult fix for what so many users need.

    Not sure if this will help or not.

    There is a registry key for the BC install folder. It may be read by the installer to decide where to put BC or it may be written only. I don't know. It might be worth setting BEFORE installing BC to see what happens.

    64-bit Windows

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Garmin\BaseCamp]
    "InstallDir"="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Garmin\\BaseCamp\\"

    32-bit Windows

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\BaseCamp]
    "InstallDir"="C:\\Program Files\\Garmin\\BaseCamp\\"

    Don't bother. Just tried installing 4.2.5 in a WinXP SP3 VM with a predefined InstallDir key and it made no difference at all :(

    Yes, there is a way to do this. I had the same dilemma recently, checked online and found the answer, as under:

    *****
    Change the Default Installation folder C:\ Program Files

    **Type REGEDIT in RUN screen and click OK
    **Scroll to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion
    **On the right window, double click on the key PROGRAMFILESDIR and modify it to include the new path for the installation folder.
    - For example, D: Program Files would install all program files onto the D partition instead of C.
    --------

    It was easy to do, but be careful as you go through it!! Now all my programs automatically go to my F: drive, which I want to happen.

    Cheers

    Thank you for the advise, it worked for me with the addition that if you use windows 7 with 64bits you also need to perform the regedit for programfilesW6432
    Unfortunately that doesn't change anything to where Garmin express installs the maps .... yes om the C: drive (again). I found some tips for that using the mlink command, but now I can't install map updates anymore. The battle continues and all because Garmin software keeps on installing to C: drive. It is pain just because they do not give you the option to install to any other drive. Something that 95% of all software does.

    Martin, all of my maps have automatically loaded onto the F: drive, as I wanted. There is nothing for Garmin on my C: drive. BTW, it was a brand new computer, being set up how I wanted it. Did you try doing it exactly as I said, or did you alter the directions because of the 64bit difference?

    So that everyone knows, the development team that has created BaseCamp is not the keeper of the installer. We have a separate team that does that to be sure that we have a repeatable release every time an installer is created. It is a check and balance of preventing the "it works on my desk" e-mails from being sent around. That said, this has been requested a number of times, and I am not sure what the hold up on that is. I will do some research and find out.

    So here it is SIX months later. Is there any update on this ?

    No, there has not been an update on this. And as I said before, we are aware that some users want this as an installation option, but there is no time frame available to point to when such a feature would be included.

    Thank you for your patience regarding this issue.
