I have obtained a number of gpx files lately from EveryTrail.com and Blogs of people who have done cycling trips. All say they are gpx files but as soon as I try and import them into Basecamp I get an 'unknown error opening import file'.
Any ideas?

That is true. Over recent years Garmin has reduced the number of maps products available on CD/DVD, probably due to cost, and instead puts them out on pre-programmed microSD cards and/or in download format. Thus the ability to read such maps (i.e. IMG files) from devices/cards was added to BaseCamp. That is a nice feature for those using 3rd party maps (such as OSM). I have a number of them myself.
But these days there's really no need to 'save mapsets' ...
Sure there is. But no point arguing about it. If you don't see a use then fine. I do however :p
MapInstall was designed with the assumption (for the most part) that users transfer whole map products at once. That is probably true for 99% of users but I'm in the 1% :D

Well I don't know about that but MapInstall will allow you to choose parts of a map to compile into one .img file, you don't have to transfer whole map products at once ... maybe you didn't know that :)
Guys after taking your advice and playing around with Base Camp, the "light finally" came on and I now understand how Base Camp and MapInstaller work vs MapSource. The whole .gpx vs .img is finally understood;)
