Problems importing gpx files into Basecamp

I have obtained a number of gpx files lately from EveryTrail.com and Blogs of people who have done cycling trips. All say they are gpx files but as soon as I try and import them into Basecamp I get an 'unknown error opening import file'.
Any ideas?
  • Yes, they're probably corrupt or unacceptable gpx files. Are you able to post an example here so others can look at it?

Alternatively try importing them into another program, in the UK for example www.bikehike.co.uk and see if they load OK. If they do export them again and see if that resolves the issue.

Sounds crazy, but try shutting BaseCamp down and restarting. Mine will frequently work after that.

File 2018165.gpx Richfield Pioneer Kilns - Utah, United States will not open in either Basecamp or Mapsource. It was recorded using Everytrail for Android.

I noticed that many of the tracks that could not be opened were recorded with a smart phone of some kind. Regular Garmin or Magellan units usually work.

It may be coincidence, but may of the unopenable tracks had pictures of trail head signs. These are usually the tracks I would like to down load and find.

    Any ideas?

I just loaded the latest Base Camp and can't import any of my Mapsource map files or Waypoints, I get the 'unknown error opening import file'. I have closed and reopened but no luck. Any one seen this before?
  • You don't 'import' map files into Basecamp. If Mapsource can see them then Basecamp should too ... what maps are they?

How are you trying to move your Mapsource waypoints to Basecamp? You should be able to highlight them all, select copy then paste them straight into a Basecamp list.

I have several map sections of the US that I have created and I load them onto an SD card as needed. Base Camp does not show these maps when I select TOPO USA 2008 like Mapsource does. I selected file>import> to copy and paste the maps from my hard drive but this doesn't seem to work.
  • You can't install maps into Basecamp like that. If they're on a sd card Basecamp will read them off there, although Mapsource can't do that.

Do these topo maps appear in Mapsource in the map drop down list?

Yes, Mapsource recognizes these maps from the hard drive file and they appear in the drop down menu, I was exepecting Base Camp to do this as well. Base Camp also doesn't show my National Parks East 24K or City Navigator maps like Mapsource.

So are you saying I have to download these maps to Base Camp from my device? That doesn't make sense to me and maybe I will just stick with Mapsource if that's the case.

BC should recognize any maps on your HD if they're available in MapSource. All mine are.

BC will read (but NOT copy to HD) maps on your device (or card in it) but MapSource will not.
  • No, you can't download the maps from your device to Basecamp, that wasn't what I suggested. What should happen is that if they appear in the Mapsource drop down list they should also appear in the Basecamp drop down list and be visible in Basecamp, all my map files appear in both. Do any maps appear in both drop down lists? If so which ones are showing in both and which are only showing in Mapsource?
