Problems importing gpx files into Basecamp

I have obtained a number of gpx files lately from EveryTrail.com and Blogs of people who have done cycling trips. All say they are gpx files but as soon as I try and import them into Basecamp I get an 'unknown error opening import file'.
Any ideas?
  • Handhelds generally accept up to 32Gb, Garmin suggest up to 8Gb for nuvis. I don't think you'll see 4 and 8Gb cards disappearing for a while, one Gb are still available,

Thanks, I have an 8 GB in my nuvi which holds all of North America (for now) as I have lifetime maps.

I see that you have an Oregon 450 with a 32GB SD.

No. In fact all my units have 32GB cards in them without any issues.

As luck would have it I'm copying .img's to some of them right now :)

is limited to 4000 map sets...

    As is my 450.

    Stuart and Sussam,

I received this information from Garmin tech support, I would like to know your opinion on this method.

View Topo 24K National Parks in Basecamp:

The Topo National Parks 24K is a map that is many years old. In the day, the disks would have required insertion in a computer to be able to view the map. The maps we create today don't need this process. We had created a software, that placed the maps in a directory folder usually stored on the desktop. With this operation, the map content does not need the disk to be inserted for view in Mapsource. I am assuming that this is what you might mean by directory folder. If this is the case, then you should be able to select "maps" in Basecamp then scroll to the Topo maps. Since this map must be used a little differently and was designed for Mapsource, the map should work in Basecamp, but not always.

By design, older multi disk topo maps require the original CDs to be in the disc drive to function. This is because the map image files are not copied to the hard drive during installation. This is how the product is intended to work. If necessary, the maps may be installed to the hard drive using an unsupported alternative method. This alternate method is provided as a possible workaround and is not supported by Garmin since unforeseen issues can occur causing the maps to not work properly.

*Note: BaseCamp will not display multi disk Topo maps unless the alternate install has been performed.

Before the alternate installation, first uninstall US TOPO from the computer. To uninstall:

On the keyboard, press the Windows Key + R.
In the text box, type Control Panel.
    Click OK.
Under Programs, click Uninstall a Program (Category View).
Right click on US TOPO v 3.02.
    Click Uninstall.
Once the data is uninstalled, the contents of all discs must be copied to the computer's hard drive. To copy the content:

On the keyboard, press the Windows Key+E.
    Open the C: drive.
    Open the Garmin folder.
Press CTRL+SHIFT+N on the keyboard to create a new folder.
Change the name of the New Folder to US TOPO.
Press the back arrow to go back to the main Windows Explorer menu.
Insert disc one in the drive. If it auto starts, cancel or exit the install.
Right click on the drive itself and select Open.
Press Ctrl + A on the keyboard to select all the files and folders.
Press Ctrl + C on the keyboard to copy all the files and folders.
Open the newly created US TOPO folder and press Ctrl + V on the keyboard to paste the files.
Repeat steps 7-11 for discs two and three.
After all discs have been completely copied to the TOPO folder, install the program. To install:

Remove any US TOPO discs from the disc drive.
    Open the US TOPO folder.
    Run Setup.exe.
Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
When the installation begins, the installer may display a message about connecting to the internet to update the GPS device. If this occurs, select NO. When asked to confirm, select YES.

After the installation is complete, ensure that MapSource is up to date. The latest version of MapSource may be obtained at http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

Now that US TOPO has been successfully installed to the hard drive, the map images will be used from the TOPO folder and not from the CDs.

*Note: If the TOPO folder is moved or deleted, the maps will no longer function.
  • I'll let Stuart answer this; he has more knowledge on Mapsource and US topos than me :)

That was true--over a decade ago. I don't think "Topo 24K National Parks" is that old. I have one of those maps and it doesn't require the CD to be inserted.

Garmin simply sent you this FAQ which I have posted before. I didn't post it in this thread because I didn't think any of your maps required the CD to be inserted. If I'm mistaken then you should install the maps to HD since BaseCamp doesn't support maps that require the CD to be inserted.

PS: I own TOPO US 3.02 but I don't have it installed anymore. It consists of 3 CD's.

Correct, none of my maps (TOPO 2008, City Navigator, NP East) require the CD to be inserted as everything is already loaded on my HD and visible within Mapsource. I thought this was an incorrect response but its no big deal...

    Thanks for the input!

Just remember where you came from ... the names and their country of origin on the walls of the Alamo say it all :p

Anyway, it's the other way around, Europe is off OUR coast :)
