Problems importing gpx files into Basecamp

I have obtained a number of gpx files lately from EveryTrail.com and Blogs of people who have done cycling trips. All say they are gpx files but as soon as I try and import them into Basecamp I get an 'unknown error opening import file'.
Any ideas?
  • Me neither. I still don't know what the OP has in a) mapsource map drop down list and b) basecamp map drop down list.

Now you and I know these should be the same, but I'd like the OP to confirm that. Having done so what exactly are these 'saved map files'?

Here are the map files that I have for TOPO USA 2008:

Perhaps you're referring to mapsets--that is portions of map products that you selected and saved to one or more GDB files in MapSource. BC doesn't support mapsets and neither does the PC version of MapInstall to my knowledge, MapInstall is a seperate program installed with BaseCamp and it is the software that transfers maps to devices.

BTW a mapset (GDB file) does NOT contain maps. It contains a list of maps.

I understand and maybe I haven't used the corrrect teminology. Since my GPS will only support up to 4000 map files I have to break down the USA by regions. I have these map files saved by a specific region as described above and then load these files to a SD card. These are the map files that are not appearing in the Base Camp drop down list.

As I explained above that sounds like mapsets in individual GDB (MapSource) files. BC and MapInstall don't support that functionality.

I do the same thing and use MapSource for transferring maps.
  • If you're correct then MapInstall will allow the OP to install subsets or the complete maps to his GPS, if that is indeed what he's after.

@Barry To do so hook up your GPS to your PC, then run Basecamp. Right click your GPS in the Basecamp left hand pane and select Install maps and follow the wizzard. This allows you to send whatever subset you want to your GPS.

Edit: having seen his post which he did while I was one finger typing seems we've got to the bottom of it :)

Yes, but you cannot save the selection to a (GDB) file for future use in MapInstall. MapSource can (and I do--routinely).

    Like this I'm guessing.

True :) But you can simply copy the .img file to somewhere on your hard drive so you can swap it at will :p

    Stuart and SussamB,

Thanks for all you help on this and it sounds like I need to continue to use Mapsource to transfer my map sets to my device or SD card. That is OK for me and I will use Base Camp for some of the additional enhancements not available in MS.

    I do that too :p

On my 76CSx, which only supports one .img (gmapsupp.img), I keep multiple .img files on the card and rename them as needed.

On my Oregon 450 I also have multiple .img's. However because of the 4,000 segment limit I keep some in another folder (that the unit doesn't check for maps) and move them when needed.

Having "grown up" with a (original) eTrex Legend with only 8MB (yes megabytes) of map memory I mastered the concept of mapsets and transferring them.
