BaseCamp Doesn't Read Topo Maps on GPS

I have a problem getting BaseCamp to read the Topo maps I have installed on an eTrex30 - be grateful for any suggestions ...

I can see the GPS in Windows Explorer and in the left hand panel of Base Camp - I can also send routes and waypoints to the GPS ...

But the Topo maps installed on the device are not visible in Base Camp ...

They don't appear in the drop-down menu, and the View menu only has an item for 'Basic Map Only' ...

This is Base Camp 4.2.2 ...

I am running an older version of Base Camp on another computer (3.2.2) and the Topo maps are visible when I connect the same eTrex to that computer ...

Any suggestions ... ?
  • What Topo map? A Garmin one or a custom/3rd party one?
  • Use JaVaWa Device Manager to make the maps visible in Basecamp ... http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html

    Garmin Topo maps ...

And the set-up works fine on the other computer - has done for a couple of years, and I use it at least once a week ...

Thanks - I've downloaded Java Device Manager ...

Do I just connect the GPS, then run the EXE file and follow prompts ... ?

Are there any conceivable downsides to doing this ... ?

It's not going to mess around with (for example) my USB mobile broadband dongle ... ?
  • yes, yes, no and no.
However, since the setup works on your other computer, I don't think it will help...
On the other hand, maybe you have the maps installed on your other computer (in that case the map would be available there without connecting the eTrex). If so, you can copy the map from that PC to the other one with JaVaWa GMTK. This is preferrable to using the map directly from the eTrex, because that will always be slower.

My first post explains the situation ...

It's critical that I have the Topo maps on the GPS, as I am not taking the computer out into the bush ...

Do you think the Java program will help?

    Maybe.

How did you get the Garmin Topo's onto your eTrex 30?

    1) Did you buy a DVD and transfer the maps to your eTrex 30 using MapSource/MapInstall?

    2) Did you buy a Garmin pre-programmed card with the Topo's on it?

    3) Did you buy the maps in download format and put them on your own card?

Now BC is supposed to show maps from 2) and 3).

Should I purchase mapping for my GPS on a disc, pre-programmed datacard, or as downloadable content?

I think (never tried it) JaVaWa Device Manager is supposed to make those in 1) work in BC.

As to why BC 3.3.2 works but 4.2.2 doesn't that'd be a question for FALAGAR.

The Garmin Topo maps were purchased as an SD card and have been loaded into the GPS since purchase.
  • Sounds like a bug in BC 4.2.2 then.

    My suspicion also.

Does anyone know where I can obtain an install EXE file for Base Camp version 3.2.2?
