Arrive Continue

On our latest trip that started at the end of June I started experiencing a strange problem with my 660. I'm using a PC with Win 7, BC 4.2.2 and NT 2013.4 maps on both laptop and 660. After plotting my routes in BC, transferring them to the 660 and checking them when I start a route all works as it should then somewhere down the road the distance to next turn disappears and the top line displays "Arrive Continue" or some times it's blank. The map still works but the announcement of the next turn is abbreviated and doesn't make any since. Turning off the unit or stopping and starting the route doesn't solve the problem. The only thing that seems to work is to recalculate the route and even then some times the problem comes back. I contacted Garmin tech support but the tech was absolutely no help.

I've noticed a discussion on this problem on another forum but with no resolution. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me nuts.

Oh, I forgot to mention, my 660 is using the latest firmware (not sure what that is)...
  • Well I have a 239 mile trip tomorrow and will report if I have a problem again.

Keeps you on your toes though...

I'm on a trip right now having the same issue. If I export the list as a GPX, read it into Mapsource and then load it into my Zumo the mysterious arrive continues are gone. Importing the GPX into Basecamp and trying again does NOT fix the issue. Very strange.....
  • On a 169 mile trip today and the same thing happened. My information bar or what every you call it across the top of the screen was blank for about 30 miles.

Is this a problem with a route made by BC or part of the newest maps.

I'd say a problem with Basecamp as Mapsource has no issue creating routes without the arrive-continue problem. That's how I've been operating now. Creating my routes in Bascamp, then exporting to GPX. Read them into Mapsource, recalculate and load into the GPS. No issues after that for me or my riding buddy on my trip to Northern CA last week.

I wish Garmin could do a better job of protecting their code base. Things get updated slowly, but they also break other things along the way. The update cycle is so slow your only options is to try and revert back to a previous version of the program, or never update for fear of having an unusable version of the software.

Garmin used to have motorcycle riders testing their products on the road. I even met a pilot/motorcycle rider from Switzerland in 2002 at a rally in Ashland OR who was testing a 2610. I don't think they are doing this anymore. Too bad! :(

I agree, and the propensity to break things that used to work seems to be increasing which indicates a less-than-stellar impact analysis / regression testing regime.

This Arrive / Continue issue has been around for some time now and makes the device very difficult to use in certain circumstances yet there hasn't even been an acknowledgement of the problem from Garmin, let alone a "Yes, we've identified the issue, it'll be fixed in the next release" response.

That would probably have been Michael Moore who was very active in the Honda ST1100 / Pan-European community. Nice guy. Perhaps if Garmin reverted to proper field testing of their "developments" there would be fewer excursions up blind alleys?

I'd gladly volunteer to field test the software!

However, I can't believe they don't know the devices are doing this. As you say, at a minimum, they should at least acknowledge the existence of the problem. Better yet, they should focus their programming resources on resolving an issue like this before developing new features! I don't recall a hardware/software company that is slower to respond to know glitches.

As a stock holder of Garmin it pains me to see this kind of customer service. Garmin used to be the gold standard for these devices. At the moment though there aren't many alternatives. I've been selling off my investment in Garmin over the past few years due to this kind of performance.

We are having trouble reproducing this.

Could you get us an example route (as gpx) that shows the problem and attach it here?

Please also tell us which map you are using and which device and firmware version.

    Thank you.

    Basecamp 4.2.2
    Zumo 660 Software Version 4.90
    Maps 2014.20

The attached gpx has multiple 'arrive continue's in the middle of the route when I upload it to my unit with Basecamp or Mapsource. I can recalculate it in Mapsource and upload a functional route. Nothing seems to clear it up when uploading to the 660 from Basecamp.

As stated earlier, I have sent routes screen shots ... with absolutely no response from Garmin. These items were sent back in July. Look at my file. Your customer service is far from except-able.

    Basecamp 4.2.2
    Zumo 660 Software Version 4.90
Maps City Navigator Europe NT 2013.41

The attached gpx exhibits the first "Arrive Continue" approximately 2.6 miles in, immediately after joining the A2. There are multiple further spurious instructions followed by "Arrive Continue" on the screen. The first of these is approximately 6 miles into the route when the unit annunciates "At roundabout, take second". Following the route instructions was a real bundle of laughs. Enjoy!
