Arrive Continue

On our latest trip that started at the end of June I started experiencing a strange problem with my 660. I'm using a PC with Win 7, BC 4.2.2 and NT 2013.4 maps on both laptop and 660. After plotting my routes in BC, transferring them to the 660 and checking them when I start a route all works as it should then somewhere down the road the distance to next turn disappears and the top line displays "Arrive Continue" or some times it's blank. The map still works but the announcement of the next turn is abbreviated and doesn't make any since. Turning off the unit or stopping and starting the route doesn't solve the problem. The only thing that seems to work is to recalculate the route and even then some times the problem comes back. I contacted Garmin tech support but the tech was absolutely no help.

I've noticed a discussion on this problem on another forum but with no resolution. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me nuts.

Oh, I forgot to mention, my 660 is using the latest firmware (not sure what that is)...
  • My guess would be that your device is the problem. But here are some things you can check first.

In the past, extra line return lines in files have caused problems for some devices. Check one of your problem routes with a text editor (Notepad, Wordpad or even Word).

If you entered more than 50 points in a route, this could cause problems on your device.

If your route contained more than one Activity Profile (new feature), it might cause a problem and I’m sure the development team will want to know more.

Back to your device. Sometimes Garmin firmware just goes wonky. First, save all the data on your device. I would go straight to a factory reset. This is different from the Reset you can do from one of the menus. I don’t own your device, so I don’t know the procedure. Do an internet search for Zumo 660 factory reset and/or Zumo 660 hard reset. This will erase all user data on the device and probably any custom settings (screen views, WAAS etc.).

However, if you don’t want to go straight to a factory reset, you can try deleting all user data from the device (after saving the data), cycle thru a start up/shut down (verify the data is deleted), and then reload your data. Sometimes this will fix odd behavior on devices.

    Btlaake,

    Thanks for the reply.

1 I haven't checked the file for extra return lines, I'll do that.
2 Most of my routes are very simple, Start, End and maybe 4 or 5 shaping points. I had one go bad with just a Start and End point
3 Don't know what an Activity Profile is, how do you check for one?
4 Have preformed the factory reset, once before calling Garmin and then the tech had me do it again. No joy.

Here's one of the routes that had the problem.
  • Falagar, in case it helps, this "arrive continue" behavior has been noted by users at the Zumo forum, and some observe it seems to have started with routes created with BC 4.2.1.

Another possible key to the puzzle, it happens with Mac or PC, I've had it happen on shortest distance but I've not seen it happen on fastest time, of course 99% of my routes are shortest distance/motorcycle.
  • I had a similar problem on my last trip also. I have a 465t and am using Win 7, BC 4.2.2 and NT 2013.4 maps. The route worked for a distance and then the distance to next turn and the location of the turn (Left top Corner and top information bar) completely went blank. The GPS tried to tell me a turn but all it said was 2 tenths and quit.

I tapped the blue bar at the top, which normally gives a list of the turns and all it showed was a number of decimal numbers in tenths and when I scrolled down it showed a turn distance and the name of the turn. Once it got by the numbers only it showed the proper turn and name. This lasted for a number of miles then everything seemed to work normally. This is the first time it has ever happened.

It is like the GPS recalculated the route and added a number of unnamed points. I only had two waypoints. The start and ending. This surprised me very much as I had never incurred it before. I though my GPS had gone bad again.

If it happens again I will post it on this forum.

    BC

PS my trip was about 219 miles. From Silver Lake WA to Waldport OR via Hwy 101.

I've done two significant m/c trips this year with my Zumo 660. On the first one, all routes were planned using Win 7, BC 4.2.1 and CNEU NT 2013.4 maps and none exhibited the "Arrive Continue" problem; for the second trip the only difference was that the routes were planned using BC 4.2.2 and while a couple of the routes didn't suffer the issue, most did and it drove me nuts. Recalculating the route on the Zumo fixed the problem on some of the routes, but not on others. Seems to be a BC 4.2.2 issue...

I reported this problem well over a month ago with detailed routes and screen shots. As usual, no reply from Garmin.
