Hi

First here are my technical Specs:

Windwos 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
Basecamp 4.2.2

The first two weeks everything went perfectly. A couple days ago, my basecamp isn't starting properly, precisely it isn't starting at all. There is a notification, which says that there is a problem with the installation of microsoft .NET. I should uninstall all microsoft .NET frameworks and reinstall it.
I have the following .NET frameworks installed:

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile
  • Microsoft .NET framework 4 Extended

and some language packages. I uninstalled all these packages and reinstalled it again, causing the same issue with basecamp. I also tried to uninstall additionally basecamp and reinstall it leading to the same problem.

It would be appreciated if someone could help me. Thanks in advance.

I had a similar problem with BaseCamp not starting on my WinXP box.

I fixed it last year so I am not remembering everything that I did but the main problem was that my computer installed the latest update into my backup hard drive E:/, not C:/ drive.

My E:/ is a bootable mirror image backup so if C:/ crashes I just switch drives and have everything, all software and files, up and running except maybe the last few hours.
So I had 2 BaseCamp programs but the desktop link was for the C:/ drive which would not work even after multiple re-installs because the re-installs kept going to E:/.

I dug thru E:/ and found the BaseCamp.exe and started BaseCamp from there, performed a BackUp and placed a link on my desktop to the E:/ BaseCamp version.

That worked but very slow so after a few weeks I did another BackUp, uninstalled BaseCamp with "Add Remove Programs", NOT EVERYTHING, you want to keep the Backup files, went into C:/ > Program Files > Garmin > BaseCamp > and after looking thru the BaseCamp folder to make sure none of my rides were in there I deleted the entire folder.

I went to E:/ > Program Files > Garmin > BaseCamp > and renamed that folder Backup BaseCamp so the installer would not find it again but I still wanted to keep this working version just in case.

    Deleted the desktop BaseCamp shortcut.

Went to the Garmin website and installed a fresh copy of BaseCamp and it worked. I checked C:/ > Program Files > to make sure it was there then started the new BaseCamp, performed a "Reinstall from Previous Version" and all my files appeared.

A real PITA but now BaseCamp finally works perfectly.

Hi, I have a similar problem Basecamp suddenly stopped working and it happened in the past couple of days.

    My specs are this:
Windows 8,1 Pro with Media Centre 64 Bit
    Basecamp 4.2.5 - Current version

I have tried all the solutions offered here, however .Net 4.x is inbuilt into Windows 8 so can only be activated / deactivate, the same goes for .Net 3.5. I have enven downloaded a fresh copy of Basecamp in case that was casuing a problem. Nothing works.

Fortunately this time I have all the maps & data backed-up so I am safe. If I can only access the data!

The ancient Mapsource still runs, so I am able to preserve my any future tracks etc.

Can anyone give me some advice, and more especially why this happened in the first place?

Thanks for any help & advice that can be given.

    Best regards

    Hello Ingrid,

    Here is a guess.

Last year I did an automated upgrade on BaseCamp and it started working very slow and sometimes not at all.
I finally found the problem by right clicking the BaseCamp icon > Properties > Shortcut Tab > and looked at what it says in the window "Start in:".
I have 2 hard drives, main and backup, C:/ and E:/.
Somehow the automated Garmin update decided to put the new update in E:/  so check yours.

I fixed it by opening the C:/ version and E:/ version side by side. Transferred new tracks from E:/ to C:/. Deleted all BaseCamp from E:/. Downloaded the BaseCamp update manually from Garmin website and installed it making sure it showed C:/ drive.
Deleted Desktop shortcut icon to E:/ and made a new shortcut to BaseCamp from C:/ drive.

    Hi Don,

Thanks very much for the response.

I checked it and found this was not the case.

Despite doing a search for the issue - probably due to the Law of Computer Forum Searches - I discovered the solution after you had posted. This turned out to be the solution - https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?80470-BaseCamp-does-not-start-quot-NET-quot-error-message.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I was away for a few days.

    Thanks & best regards

The following solution works for me:

I just found the error and a solution!
The following file was corrupt or damaged:
    Folder: C:\Users\****\AppData\Local\GARMIN_Corp\BaseCamp.exe_Url_bzc2******\4.2.5.0
    File Name: user.config
Damage Type: the file was 32 kB but completely empty (should contain XML code)
    The solution:
    1. Delete the file "user.config"
    2. Start BaseCamp
    3. A new file is generated by BaseCamp while BaseCamp starts

Check other folders if not working

If you've deleted the user.config file in the file, C:\Users\***\AppData\Local\GARMIN_Corp\BaseCamp.ex e_Url_bzc2***\4.2.5.0, and it still doesn't work, you may have a different version.

Look for any other BaseCamp.ex... folders in the GARMIN_Corp folder and delete the user.config file there and try restarting the program.
