Frustrating!!!! maps changing???

2557LMT, all current updates loaded
When using any of the online mapping services, MapQuest, Google, etc I create a map going exactly where
I want to go, using the roads I want to use, all looks good.
Download to the unit and it apparently thinks it knows where I want to go better than I do.
All of my work creating my map goes wonky, seemingly random changes here and there.
I've tried changing preferences avoidances etc, with little to no help.

This is extremely frustrating!!!! I can draw my maps out on napkins with more success, at least they wont change.

BTW, In case nobody has noticed BaseCamp is essentially useless.

I'm about to throw this thing in the garbage.

Connect your nuvi up to BaseCamp. After the green bar under it fills up completely, BaseCamp will show the detailed map from the nuvi if you go to the drop down box that says "Global Map" and change it to the other option listed. See for what it looks like when you do that.

So, what I've gotten from this is that the NUVI has to be connected to the computer in order to have any success in using BaseCamps trip planner, because it appears the information is drawn from the NUVI using the satellite signal?? That's what it seems is happening, which means it doesn't work at my house unless I'm outside because I don't get any signal indoors.
At any rate I've wasted better than 4hrs today screwing around trying to draw a flipping map, which I can do using any other program or website in 5 minutes.
There is NO REASON this should this difficult. What a piece of crap this has turned out to be!!!
  • You're really not helping yourself.

No, you don't need a gps signal, as posted BC reads the map off your nuvi. There are also a couple of ways to avoid this but I'm unclear whether you're interested?

I can create a route in seconds ... So could you if you're prepared to learn.

What I'm interested in is being able to draw a useable map to download to my GPS.
I can draw 3D CAD drawings, but I cant draw a map?? Really??

I tried using trip planner, i couldn't even consistently enter starting and ending addresses, nearly everything it brought up was
totally unrelated to the address I was typing in(in what appeared to be the correct format). I never did get far enough to try editing the map
once it came up, because of course it wasn't anywhere close to the route I wanted to take.

At this point I'm looking for a pen and some used toilet paper to draw my maps with..........
  • You see that proves it, you really aren't listening .. You've been told numerous times you're trying to create a route/trip NOT a map. I give up.

I've already deleted a post of yours for name-calling. Please calm down.

Hooking up the nuvi to BaseCamp does not require a satellite signal. There is a file on the nuvi that contains the map. Your computer needs to read that file from the nuvi. It does not involve satellite signals.

What exactly are you trying to do here? Do you truly want to make a map, or do you want to make a route that will hit certain points on the map? For example, an example route would be "start at home, drive to the grocery store, drive from there to the bank, then drive to the park, then go back home" or "start in Lincoln, NE and drive to Grandma's house in Council Bluffs, IA". Making a route would be like buying the state's highway map at a convenience store and then sitting down in the car with a sharpie and drawing a line along the roads you want to take.

When you say you want to make a map, I interpret that as you sitting down and drawing every single road in the city along with shading in all the parks and drawing the ponds and lakes in blue. Your nuvi already has a map installed. It has all the roads, points of interest, parks, lakes, etc. in it. If you connect it to BaseCamp and wait for it to read in the map off of your nuvi, you can switch BaseCamp over to displaying that map as per my earlier post.

So what are you trying to do?

Okay, I opened up BaseCamp and hooked up my nuvi to it. After it loaded the map (see my previous post on that), I went to File -> New -> Route. Ignore the popup about dragging waypoints. In fact, just close the popup. You should have a pencil for a cursor on the map. Zoom in to Missouri Valley, IA. Click the pencil on it. Move the map over to Grand Island, NE and click the pencil on that. Move the map over to North Platte, NE and click the pencil on that. It will have calculated a route that follows I-80 the whole way. You have made it abundantly clear that you don't want that. So, in the left pane of the window, click the route (see my screenshot where it says "Missouri Valley to North Platte" towards the bottom left of the picture). Towards the top of the window, there is a pencil icon with a plus sign next to it (again, see my screenshot). Click it and move your mouse cursor to somewhere along the magenta line between Missouri Valley and Grand Island. There will be a big gray line displayed between the two points. When you see that, click your mouse. That will bring up a pair of small gray lines -- one is pointing from Missouri Valley to your cursor, the other is pointing from your cursor to Grand Island. Move your cursor to Columbus, NE. Click on highway 30 just East of where it turns south in Columbus. The result will look like the screenshot I have attached. You can double click the route as it is listed in the left pane of the window to get a popup (see attached screenshot). Is that what you want?

OK, after a night at work and watching some more tutorials both here and private ones, I figure I'm ready to give this a shot. I did manage to create a ROUTE yesterday using Trip Planner but it was a gigantic hassle getting starting and ending addresses entered for some reason. When I started typing the address the drop-down appears but most of the addresses that appear in the drop down aren't even close to what I'm typing. I would think that if I start typing "5056 johnson ave...." the items in the drop down wouldn't start with random numbers and address totally unrelated to what I was typing?? When I had my address typed in using what appeared to be the correct format it wouldn't find it.

Oh well, skip trip planner for now, lets just try a simple ROUTE, on my MAP(notice I have the route/map thing burned into my head today, I am not totally un-trainable.
Anyway, I open BaseCamp and this is what i see:

There's a problem however, I cannot select "new route" as anything that leads me there is grayed out.

Going to File-New has everything grayed out except Garmin Adventure.

The Tools drop down is grayed out from waypoint down.
    Whats up here???
  • If you click on a folder or list under "My Collection", does that activate the tools?
