Frustrating!!!! maps changing???

2557LMT, all current updates loaded
When using any of the online mapping services, MapQuest, Google, etc I create a map going exactly where
I want to go, using the roads I want to use, all looks good.
Download to the unit and it apparently thinks it knows where I want to go better than I do.
All of my work creating my map goes wonky, seemingly random changes here and there.
I've tried changing preferences avoidances etc, with little to no help.

This is extremely frustrating!!!! I can draw my maps out on napkins with more success, at least they wont change.

BTW, In case nobody has noticed BaseCamp is essentially useless.

I'm about to throw this thing in the garbage.
  • Is there a question here?

FYI your nuvi will always calculate the route based on the map you have loaded and the avoidances/routing options that you've set.

    Question??
    Yes, WHY??

OK , so if I want to drive across the the state of Nebraska East to West, I draw a map that uses hwy 30 from Missouri Valley to Grand Island and then drops south to I80 and then I80 west to North Platte.
If I load this file to the GPS, and the GPS is set to "avoid highways" It re-draws the map to use all secondary roads north of I80. If I don't set it to avoid highways it will put me on I80 all the way from Omaha to North Platte irregardless of what I drew on my map.

It appears that I have to chose between all interstate or all secondary, not a combination??
How do I get it to follow the map I load without it recalculating the route??
Often times there are places off the beaten path we want to pre-plan a route to. How do we do that??
  • If you are using Mapquest to create your route, the trick is to convert the intermediate via points to "Stops" before you transfer the route to your nuvi. Right click on each via point and select "Make it a route stop" on the popup menu. If you don't do this, the via points will be ignored on the imported route. The more via points you include in your route, the more likely the nuvi will preserve the route when it recalculates.

Wrong forum for this. I'm moving it to the BaseCamp forum where you will find more assistance on planning trips using BaseCamp.

That's nice, I would have thought that you'd have figured out by now that I DONT WANT TO USE BASE CAMP!!! It's a GIGANTIC CLUSTER.
I tried it, spent hours trying to do a map for 400mi, now a month later I can't make it work again. It is totally non-intuitive. I can't even get it to zoom down to see my street?? People that I know that have been doing this for years can't make Base Camp work right.

I am far from computer illiterate, and far from being an idiot, but the hoops that I have to jump thru to do what seems like a simple task are ridiculous!!
What I can't figure out is why if I feed my GPS a standard .gpx map file that is already done, why does it have to re-calculate it into something different??

I tried the above advice of making changing the via points to stops. Now when I download that route the GPS separates it into multiple seperate routes?? If I wanted it done that way I would have done it that way in the first place, but 4 or 5 seperate maps for each day's travel makes no sense, does it??

    Still frustrated...........
  • Well something is wrong with the way you're using Basecamp because I can zoom, create routes etc with no problem. To zoom just select the tool that looks like a hand, click anywhere on the map and you can then drag using the mouse and zoom in/out using the scroll wheel. Or select the magnifying tool, left click and hold, draw a box around the area you want and release. It really couldn't be more simple.

Note you're transferring a .gpx file, not a map, when you send a route to your nuvi. As for it being broken down into multiple separate 'trips', that again has nothing to do with Basecamp, Mapquest or anything else. It's how the nuvi you bought works.

Thus my original question, WHY does it do this??? The way this NUVI works is flipping retarded. WHY would I want to break down one day's trip into seperate maps?? It won't do waypoints correctly, so if I break it down to stops it makes seperate maps out of it??

Todays attempt at Basecamp, below is the most resolution I can get, I cannot get down to anything close to street level. yes, I am fully capable of using zoom control, but here there is nothing to zoom to.
I can zoom in all I want but I never get any more roads or streets than is show here.

And why are there no Garmin representatives on this forum??
  • If that's all the resolution you can get which mapset do you have loaded? Also do you have map detail set to Highest? If you can't see the map detail level drop box go to View, Toolbars, and select Detail level.

As for your first point, that IS how all nuvis work now ... if you feel it should be changed it's no good posting here, use the link I gave you.

Connect your nuvi up to BaseCamp. After the green bar under it fills up completely, BaseCamp will show the detailed map from the nuvi if you go to the drop down box that says "Global Map" and change it to the other option listed. See for what it looks like when you do that.

To use consistent terminology, you are creating a route. A route is a list of points that you wish to follow on a map.Creating a map is a completely different thing. MapQuest or Google Maps don't use the same map as the one on your nuvi, so it will never work exactly like you want it to if you use those.

I did try to point that out a few posts ago, thanks for reinforcing it, maybe this time it'll sink in :)
