Garmin Express with Zumo 550

I already have a subset of the 2013.30 maps install on my zumo 550 using MapInstall (it has insufficent space for the whole of Weatern Europe).

Now everytime I plug the zumo into the computer, Garmin Express says there is an update and starts downloading the whole of the 2013.30 maps again. Then it discovers there is insufficient space to install the whole set of maps and aborts the install.

Why, why, why doesn't it check the space before it starts? and why, why, why does it not realise that it already has a subset of the 2013.30 maps installed already? And why does it not know that I already have all the maps installed on my PC?

As many, many other users have commented, Garmin designers have lost the plot. Either that, or all their software is now developed by school kids in an after school computer class.

In the old days when Garmin devices and software worked, I had MapSource (with a working Find and Route Planning facility), a StreetPilot 2610 which had reliable Routing Algorithms, MapInstall and Webupdater, all reliable and working properly.

Now I have Basecamp (which does not even offer a way to search for Towns or Cities and it is impossible to find an address by Postcode, and it cannot find a street unless the cursor is already located on it), A Zumo 550 which does not provide any information on the Map screen and requires me to constantly take my hand of the bars to press buttons and Garmin Express which appears to have been developed by people with no experience of Garmin devices.

I am embarrased to tell people that I still use a Garmin device. My friends used to think I was a GPS guru (I have 5 Garmin devices). Those who know just pity me.

  • Couple of points here.

I agree though that Express isn't fit for purpose at the moment.

It's trying to update your maps though as the latest is 2013.40

And in BC you can search for cities and streets. Where it fails currently is no postcode search.

I also have a Zumo 550. As the OP told, Garmin Express downloads the whole set and then complains about not having enough space.

I have not tried using a SD card inside the Zumo, as I know it will not update the internal map with MapInstall. I wonder if Garmin Express does the same trick.

Not sure exactly what you mean by this statement. I also have a Zumo 550. I just downloaded the 2013.4 map version for NA to my PC. Then used MapInstall to load the maps to an SD card in the SD slot on the PC. I loaded the complete set of maps to the SD card this way. Works great and loading to the SD card in the PC rather than in the 550 is much faster.
  • No need to keep an earlier version installed, unless you want to of course. Note that there appears to be issues between Mapsource and the latest mapsets. See this thread:

    https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?34842-MapSource-vs-BaseCamp/page6
  • In answer to one or two of the suggestions.

I know that I can specify which area to download and where to store it. I put the whole of the Map on to the computer. then I download the portion I need from BaseCamp to the Zumo.

The problem I was having wa that Garmin Explorer kept downloading the whole shooting match again and then finding it had no space.

There is another problem with Garmin Express. if it can get the whole map on to the device it does not give you any options to put it on the computer. So all the routes stored in BaseCamp cannot be shown on the latest maps unless you download all of your routes to the Zumo first. So updating routes or completing planning of a trip becomes a nightmare.

The time it takes to update depends largely on your internet connection and the speed of your PC.
Here is a video (in Dutch) of how I updated my Zumo 550 and my PC, it took about 57min.
