MapSource vs BaseCamp

This might be the same as "Fighting City Hall" but for the user of Garmin GPS for about 11 years and the MapSource Product, BaseCamp is not an equal replacement. First of all, MapSource is more intuitive and easier to navigate on my pc, which I do all of my route planning. Second, I am able to store separate files. I do one each for long rides, say 2 weeks / 3000 miles / 250 waypoints. I do a separate file for each year for shorter trips of a few hours, thus I have 2012, 2011, 2010 ... files. As for the Route Properties -> Directions screen, I can cut and paste it directly into Excel so that I can use this data to develope route itineraries. Instead of a row and column structure that is used with MapSource, BaseCamp pastes all the data in one column that is very difficult to work with, taking a lot of time to spread it back out into different columns. I use the Categories feature quite a bit to diferentiate things such as food, fuel, attractions, Harley Dealers, route plan, etc. I cannot do this with BaseCamp. Everything about the data in BaseCamp is difficult to work with. I am sorry but unless Garmin can restore features and make it easier to find your way around and save files BaseCamp is a looser in my mind.

Thanks for the replies. Am using CNNA 2013.4. If it works for you SUSSAMB, perhaps there is something wrong with my technique.

Interestingly, there is a thread in the Mac branch (https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?29261-Beta-4-0-0-5-Changes) that lists some commands one can give that restore the MapSource rubber-banding functionality to BaseCamp, if I understand it correctly.
  • I've just tried to use Mapsource on a route to see why you might be having difficulties transferring to BC, but as I haven't used it for a while can't get it to 'rubber band' at all ... whereas I have no problems with BC. Guess it's just what you're used to
  • OK, got it sorted now and can see why you're trying to use the arrow tool as that's what's needed in Mapsource.

Try this so you can see how it works in BC. Click on the route tool (same icon as in MS). Close the box that pops up and just click on the map to select a start point and again to select an end point. BC will now calculate the route based on the activity profile you've set. Now select the insert tool and hover it between the start and end points until you see a rather thick black line appear between the start and finish point. Left click the mouse and release. You'll now be able to drag the line to where you want and then left click. The route will now be recalculated using where you clicked as a via point. Add more points as required. Right click when you've finished to exit.

    Hope that helps.

(Incidentally having now refreshed my mind as to how MS works BC is far simpler!)

    For YOU maybe :p
  • Maybe true but everything is available from the toolbar and via the mouse, even deleteing/moving points as needed. Just seems far more sensible and logical ... but each to their own :)

(and as we now have postcode search I can at last leave MS behind :p)

I'm sure you'll be uninstalling it then :p

Thank you very much for that! I will give it a try. Much obliged.

As a mapmaker, I certainly won't be uninstalling Mapsource. When testing maps it's necessary to quit and restart the program frequently as changes are made. Mapsource starts instantly - no "database" to load every time. :p

Now come on--don't stay in the stone age :p Buy a quad-core machine with 16GB of RAM and that .NET application will start in no-time :D
