MapInstall

With Mapsource (sorry!) I can use the map tool to select a number of map areas which will create a list in the Maps tab. I can save that as a .gdp file and use it again and again to transfer the same set of maps to the Zumo's internal memory or SD card. That's very useful as it enables me to easily set up both my Zumos the same way and delete and reinstall the same map sets time and again.

I can't see how to do that with MapInstall but it's worth an ask - is there any way to do that?

Thanks.

Kevin
  • FYI MapSource can also "read" maps from a gmapsupp, img file. I do it from time to time.

Since most newer Garmin models can deal with names other than gmapsupp, img you might need to rename (temporarily) and/or move them to a folder MapSource recognizes (e.g. \Garmin) but the feature works.
  • The functionality you are referring to is that MapSource can compare the maps that are in the gmapsupp.img with the maps installed on your computer, and show which map tiles are present on the device. This doesn't work when those maps aren't installed on the computer.

True but then I have maps on my PC's as well as my devices :D
  • I have found the Javawa Device Manager to be an excellent tool to investigate just what has been installed on the device and on the SD card. It provides a lot of information on file names, map set names, map coverage, files sizes, and much more. It also allows for editing map names and moving map sets between device and SD card.

The tool also has a trigger to make maps visible in BaseCamp.

    See http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html

I read that, thought "I already have Javawa GMTK and I'm not sure how that could help me" so I started it just to check and still couldn't. Then I re-read your post and installed the Device Manager!

It did nothing but crash on me several times when I started it but it appears to be the 32GB card I have in my Zumo causing the problem. Having removed that it starts correctly and it will happily read both Zumo and card if the card is not in the Zumo.

Once I'd resolved that I used it and can now see both device maps in Basecamp which shows me coverage (not that I need it now as Device Manager shows me it anyway!).

Thanks very much and I'm sorry I misread your post first time. If I'd read it correctly it would have saved me a lot of time. Those JaVaWa tools are very good.

  • I like the way MapSource allows you to name mapsets.

Yeah, that's another thing on the to-do list.

MapInstall gives each map a very clear and obvious name, which can be edited at will by anyone. I used to rename them, but no longer find it necessary.
  • I wouldn't want you to think me argumentative <g> but that's an inconsistent approach as maps loaded with MapUpdater do appear twice in Basecamp if they are on both PC and device.

ONLY when the device is connected, so who cares? If you still do, use JaVaWa DeviceManager to make the map on your device invisible to BaseCamp. SIMPLE.
  • YOU'RE missing the point. I want it to be visible by default so I can easily check what is loaded (and the map display for PC and device maps is sufficiently different for it to be obvious which is which). Fortunately someone else has taken the trouble the remedy the situation. And whether you care or not, the Basecamp approach is still INCONSISTENT.

(I'm not entirely sure why we're shouting the first and last words but I wouldn't want to buck a trend)

    Kweller,

In case you haven't already found it, JaVaWa Device Manager will let you rename the map set. I just did mine using it. Mine used to show similar to yours.
