MapInstall

With Mapsource (sorry!) I can use the map tool to select a number of map areas which will create a list in the Maps tab. I can save that as a .gdp file and use it again and again to transfer the same set of maps to the Zumo's internal memory or SD card. That's very useful as it enables me to easily set up both my Zumos the same way and delete and reinstall the same map sets time and again.

I can't see how to do that with MapInstall but it's worth an ask - is there any way to do that?

Thanks.

    Not that I know of.

I also use MapSource to save mapsets in GDB files for future use. I don't use MapInstall at all. MapSource does the job just fine.
  • It's fine to use MapSource if you want, but do so at your own risk. I want to point out that the image creation code in MapSource is very dated. It might or might not work properly on the device. They have been dozens of fixes since MapSource 6.16.3 was released.

MapInstall should also be faster in image creation and transfer (depending on the type of map and device) because of performance improvements we made. MapInstall supports nMaps (more than one supplemental map), without having to manually rename gmapsupp.img. So the official recommendation is to use MapInstall, not MapSource. If something is wrong with a map on a device (mainly with routing) and you created the image with MapSource, I'd try again with MapInstall to at least eliminate one possible point of failure.

The ability to save map sets is an interesting feature, but is not currently supported by MapInstall. MapInstall does read which maps you have installed on the device and draws them on the map. So you could install one set of tiles, then reconnect the device and add or subtract some easily. It's not as helpful if you have several devices that you want the same selection for.

However, if you launch MapInstall from BaseCamp with data on the device, we will auto-select the tiles that you need to cover the data on the device (the data is also shown in MapInstall). Maybe that could be helpful.
  • Interesting. Some time ago I created a gmapsupp.img file with both MapSource 6.16.3 and MapInstall and the files were identical (did a file compare). I may've even posted about it (?).

Actually I created many IMG's years ago and have them saved (on DVD) as copying a IMG file is much faster than recreating it :) Opening a GDB is a good way to see what an IMG contains (my memory is not what it used to be).

Thanks, that's a shame. Maybe you could add it to the enhancements list? It's a strategy I know is adopted by many people (well, 'many' as in many of the people who post to forums).

I took the coward's way out in the end and used MapUpdater* to install EU on the SD card and NA 2013.40 is currently being downloaded to install on internal memory.

(*Because Garmin Express, when it's not crashing, continues to tell me my unit is up to date even when it isn't)

Which didn't work. First time I tried it Mapinfo on the Zumo told me I had two copies of the EU map installed. Second time just the one copy. the NA maps were installed both times on the PC just not the Zumo.

I seem to be spending much more time trying to find ways round problems using Garmin software than I do using it for its intended purpose at the moment.

If, for example I wanted to install all of NA plus the 3D map on my Zumo how would I do that? I'm asking because I just tried to install those maps using MapInstall by selecting all of NA when I had that map selected and I'm not sure that's what it's done. Map Info on the Zumo tells me:

    CN Europe NT 2013.30
    [1] ALL

    CN North America NT 2013.40
[1] Western Alaska, Eastern Alaska, Honolulu, Hawaii,

There's no 3D component for either and I'm not sure all of NA is on there.

I don't think I'm following that as I just tried it and I can't see what you are referring to. I have the Zumo connected to MapInstall and it only appears to show me the map from the PC I select, please see the attached image. There's nothing there to indicate what's already on the device.

When I attach the same device to Basecamp, Basecamp tells me I have EU and EU 3D installed, no mention of NA at all, please see second attachment.

  • MapInstall can only install what's on your PC to your GPS. You need to be using MapUpdater, direct link is here:

    download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.exe
  • From what you post I'm not sure they are, don't think you are either? If I were you I'd reinstall using MapUpdater.
  • I'm quite sure both maps are on the PC. If you'd read posts 5 and 6 you'd know I'd installed EU using MapUdater and it failed to install NA on the Zumo (twice).

At least some of NA is on the Zumo as it happily finds Anchorage in AK and KY.
