MapInstall

With Mapsource (sorry!) I can use the map tool to select a number of map areas which will create a list in the Maps tab. I can save that as a .gdp file and use it again and again to transfer the same set of maps to the Zumo's internal memory or SD card. That's very useful as it enables me to easily set up both my Zumos the same way and delete and reinstall the same map sets time and again.

I can't see how to do that with MapInstall but it's worth an ask - is there any way to do that?

Thanks.

Kevin
  • Misread your post 7, apologies. Guess if you want to go to Anchorage you're good to go :)

If all the NA map is on your PC and if you've selected it correctly in Mapinstall then all should be well. You should be able to check by allowing Basecamp to read the maps off your Zumo, but that doesn't seeem to work?

Looking at your jpeg of Mapinstaller what do you see when you hit the down arrow where it says CN EU?
  • I see NA 2013.40 as you'd expect. If it wasn't there I wouldn't have been able to use MI to put the NA map on the Zumo.
  • Yes, but you said you didn't think it had all gone onto the Zumo, just trying to see what could possibly be wrong :)

But ... running out of ideas. I know what I'd try ...

Clone your zumo onto a sd card or memory stick. Use MapInstall to send the maps to that. Plug that into Basecamp and verify the map shows up, then transfer the map files from the card/stick to the zumo or use the card in the zumo (deleting all the clone files first).
  • If, for example I wanted to install all of NA plus the 3D map on my Zumo how would I do that? I'm asking because I just tried to install those maps using MapInstall by selecting all of NA when I had that map selected and I'm not sure that's what it's done. Map Info on the Zumo tells me:

    CN Europe NT 2013.30
    [1] ALL

    CN North America NT 2013.40
[1] Western Alaska, Eastern Alaska, Honolulu, Hawaii,

There's no 3D component for either and I'm not sure all of NA is on there.

I don't think I'm following that as I just tried it and I can't see what you are referring to. I have the Zumo connected to MapInstall and it only appears to show me the map from the PC I select, please see the attached image. There's nothing there to indicate what's already on the device.

When I attach the same device to Basecamp, Basecamp tells me I have EU and EU 3D installed, no mention of NA at all, please see second attachment.

I apologize, I believe displaying what you have installed works only for nMap capable devices (devices that accept more than 1 supplemental map). You can see an example in the screenshot I attached. We should probably allow to do that for non nMap as well.
  • Ah OK.

May I ask a supplementary question?

Garmin Express does nothing other than tell me my unit is up to date even when it isn't, MapUpdater will install the EU maps then spends quite some time not installing NA (despite telling me it has) which basically leaves me with Map Install to put the NA maps on with.

I'm told elsewhere that Map Install can not install 3D or Junction View, is that correct? I'm not so bothered about the 3D NA map but I do really want junction view as I find that very useful.

    Thanks.

The Junction View data comes as a separate (.jcv) file from the maps (.img file) themselves. As I understand it, and I don't have maps/jcv's to test this, nuvi's only support one JCV file (at a time). Also supplemental maps (i.e. ones that didn't come with the unit) don't include the JCV file and hence data.

Does supplemental mapping contain Lane Assist, Junction Vew, and 3D building view?

All that said if you have an EU unit with EU maps and JCV plus NA maps (but no JCV) you can download the NA .jcv file from Garmin (search the forums for my post and link). With both EU and NA .jcv files on your unit you can just rename the .jcv you don't need as .sav .bak etc as you change continents (i.e. have only one .jcv file at any time).
  • Thanks but your post has highlighted that I'm confused! :)

When I say 'junction view' I actually mean 'lane assist'! The FAQ you referenced says the lane assist data will be there, something I guess I can check by simulating driving a route.

Kevin (who is hopefully less confused now!)
  • May I highlight a point I raised up there a bit but turn it into an explicit question?

When I had installed the EU maps using MapUpdater and NA maps using Map Install the Zumo told me this:

    CN Europe NT 2013.30
    [1] ALL

    CN North America NT 2013.40
[1] Western Alaska, Eastern Alaska, Honolulu, Hawaii,

If all of the NA maps had been installed by Map Install is that how you would expect the Zumo Map Info display to look or should it say [All] for NA as per the EU maps?

    Thanks.

  • I know that GarminMapUpdater only offers to install (by default) maps that will fit into a unit. For example my 1490T only has space for the "lower 49 States". I don't know (as I rarely use it) if MapInstall does the same.

If your unit can accept a SD card you should be able to install ALL of CN NA NT 2013.40 on the card.

PS: In my case I split the NA maps between the unit and an SD card. The unit contains the "lower 49 States" while Alaska, Canada and Mexico reside on the card.
  • There is enough space on my Zumo's internal memory to take all of NA - there's 2.35GB free. MapUpdater does offer to install it and it does, eventually, tell me it has been installed. The problem is that it hasn't been which is why I'm looking at Map Install and asking what I should expect to see on the Zumo's Map Info screen if Map Install has put NA on the unit.

I may be wrong but I suspect all of EU and all of NA on a single unit is an unusual scenario which is why I'm seeing these anomalies.
