If you Edit>Remove>Remove, perhaps by mistake, items get left in My Collection. Over time this becomes excessive. All the data I wish to keep is in Folders/Lists but there is no practical way to get rid of the bloat.
I was going to export each folder, delete all and then import (which would clear anything "extra") but the folder / list structures are not maintained. Something similar was raised over 8 years ago with the reply "no way to export list/folder structure apart from Backup (which of course would repopulate My Collection with the junk)" - but no improvement since- shame on you Garmin.
Anything not on a list will be in the Unlisted folder and can be deleted there.
I think I said (at least implied) that in my query - I'm afraid that answer is of no use.
I have 1350+ waypoints, 250+ routes and 210+ tracks. I have nothing that I want to keep in My Collection alone - everything I want to keep is in folders & lists.
To clear unused/ redundant waypoints by going through My Collection one by one would take far too long and could easily be resolved if one could export/import file and list structures.
About time Garmin created a solution.
Your waypoint routes and tracks are stored in My Collection. Lists essentially contain pointers/shortcuts to where the data is stored they do not contain the actual data. That is why you have the option to remove or delete an item from a list but only have the option to delete an item from My Collection; which will remove the pointer/shortcut from every list where it exists as well as remove the stored data.
Think of items on BaseCamp lists as being the same as a Windows shortcut to a file or application. You can create multiple shortcuts, but they all refer back to the same file or application; they do not create a duplicate of the file or application.
Well if BTLAAKE hasn't answered your query then I don't understand what you're saying as it should. If everything you wish to keep is in folders and lists then the rest will be in the folder 'Unlisted data' so you simply delete everything in that folder. If that isn't answering your question you need to clarify what you mean as that's two of us who don't understand
I just found this discussion while looking for help with this same problem, although in my case I am specifically trying to manage routes stored on the memory card in a zumoXT. One thing that is confusing is the behavior of doing a "Send to" at the list folder level vs. a "Send to" at the route level. From what I can tell, sending from the list folder level results in a ROUTE?.GPX file and a WAYPOINTS?.GPX file. These will contain all of the routes and all of the waypoints that were in the list folder. OTOH, doing a send from a route results in just a ROUTE?.GPX file.
Question 1: Is there value in doing a "send to" from the list folder level instead of from the route so that you have the waypoints on the device (WAYPOINTS?.GPX file)?
Question 2: Say I have done a "send to" to the memory card from three list folders, one at a time. I now have the following files on the memory card: ROUTE.GPX, ROUTE2.GPX, ROUTE3.GPX, WAYPOINTS.GPX WAYPOINTS1.GPX and WAYPOINTS2.GPX. I then decide that I need to modify one of the routes. The logical way to go about this is to modify the route in the original list folder and then do a "send to" of the modified list folder but that has failed for me (the files weren't created on the memory card). I'm assuming it is because of the duplicates. My sense is that before doing a "send to" from the modified list folder the ROUTE?.GPX and WAYPOINTS?.GPX files that are associated with the original list folder need to be deleted from the memory card. That seems absurd and appears extremely difficult anyway because there isn't a way to identify which ROUTE?.GPX and WAYPOINTS?.GPX file pair belong to which list folder. How do you deal with this?
Question 3: In Basecamp, when I delete a route from Memory Card>User Data, its associated waypoints remain. I can't find a way to identify the waypoints that were associated with that route so I can delete them. Even when there was only one route per list folder Basecamp displays the contents of all ROUTE?.GPX and WAYPOINTS?.GPX files without list folder differentiation. It's as if there is a missing folder structure within Memory Card>User Data. I understand that the device doesn't need this structure but Basecamp sure does if we are to manage our memory card data. I can't find a way to manage it on the device either. Am I overlooking anything?
